Hi There,

Has anyone purchased a fleet vehicle clearance car off trademe ? They seem to be reasonably priced but I am a bit unsure of what may be the pros and cons of such cars. If anyone had any experience buying them please share.

Cheers,
Vig

Condition will always depend on who / how it's been driven.

Pros: They've usually been regularly serviced and be in good condition (company vehicles don't usually tend to have lots of passengers often so the interiors stay like new).

Cons:  Company Cars always drive faster and tow more than your personal car. So while it may only be '3 years' old for example, Expect it to have had a harder life than an identical car of the same age that's been owned personally.

Like always check them out in person / get a mechanical inspection done if you're serious about it.

Whenever I see a relatively new car up to its rear axle in sea water launching a boat, it makes me wonder if it's a company vehicle and who the next lucky owner will be.

My top tip would be to avoid ex fleet vehicles with towbars

I bought a 3 year old Ford Ranger with 200,000kms on it back in 2010 - ex fleet from PGG Wrightsons.

Drove like a dream but I was under no illusions going into it - I knew it would have towed plenty of heavy trailers for most of its life however I knew that most of the kms would have been open road "hot running".

I never had a single issue with the vehicle - my only outgoings were fuel and regular servicing. I sold it after taking it to 300,000 kms.

If you can get hold of ex government agency fleet vehicle you can be pretty sure it hasn't been thrashed.  I know of one agency that has very tight staff policies around sticking to speed limits and driving responsibly and with courtesy, I expect most others will be the same.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

As with ANY vehicle go on condition and history rather than age or mileage.

My cars are 30 years old with 335k kms, 15 yo with 287k kms and 10 yo with 167k kms and they all drive flawlessly after having had proper maintenance their whole lives.

It's so hard to quantify what history any former fleet vehicle has. For example, my best friend has a company Ranger with no GPS device installed, and he's therefore free to more or less drive it how he sees fit.

However I have another friend who also has a company Ranger (with a different employer) who does have GPS tracking installed (which records speed along with rapid acceleration & deceleration data). His company has a strict policy of employees sticking to the posted speed limits, and the GPS data is actively monitored. He has to drive like a grandma 24/7.

If you can find out whether the former fleet operator had GPS tracking installed in the vehicle you are interested in, this may give you a better idea of how it is likely to have been driven.

More and more fleet vehicles are being fitted with these GPS tracking devices, because they all allow the employer to:
* monitor the the use of the vehicle (FBT & employee entitlement implications);
* reduce reputational risks (the driver is less likely to hoon around if Big Brother is watching him/her); and
* provide H&S cover (evidence of having taken all reasonable steps to reduce risks of company vehicle accidents)

If you can find out that the vehicle has had one fitted, it's more likely to be a good one :)
