$100 NZ buckeroos for a meat themometer ? Shessh. I picked up a cheap $15.00 unit that has served me well for 5 or so years. Admittedly, not quite as flash - no folding probe, etc, but I have found having a meat thermometer an indispensable kitchen utility - great for rotisserie BBQ's, oven roasts, etc. No more under or overcooked dinners :-)
I use a meat thermometer for really large bbq slow cooks, but rarely for something else. Steak is very easy to get right by using the base of the thumb method and a decent rest after cooking.
