Go buy one so I don't have to!

RTINGS review, pretty much the same TV as the C9.

Cheapest I've seen an OLED from the big 3. And with HDMI 2.1 too.

And I was just expressing my disappointment recently about the B9 not being the OLED bargain hero we were hoping for haha

Can you clarify that it's fully HDMI 2.1 certified?

Can it take a 48Gbps feed? Obviously it's a 4K TV, not an 8K panel... but the LG bloke I talked to said 'yes we have everything', but when I drilled into specifics he got increasingly vague and said 'I don't know - we just got told we do everything'... so yeah.

HDCP 2.3 isn't tricky, that can be implemented (AVR manufacturers did this with older products) - but what about the rest of the spec?

Newbold's is doing the Panasonic GZ1000 for $3799 at the moment, so great to see two decent 65" OLEDs under $4k.

https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=5203258

Are the real-world differences between the C9 and C8 significant? What would be the pick between the GZ1000 and C8?

One thing of value to me (though more UE than product quality) is the Panasonic's GA support, which I understand is still not supported by LG TVs in NZ?

Does it have HDMI 2.1 compliant inputs? Everything I have seen says yes. Does it actually process full fat 4k120 signals etc? Well since we don't have those sources, no one really knows. Even RTINGS say that on their review.

The B9 also has a lesser chip than the c9 (Alpha 7 gen2 vs alpha 9 gen 2), so the PQ isn't as good as the C9 apparently, but it seems pretty minor IRL.

Damn that's pretty sharp.

C9 and C8, no not a huge amount. The panel is the same; the chipset is beefier, so in turn the PQ is slightly better; but really it comes down to the HDMI 2.1 inputs.

I would probably lean more towards the LG C9 (i'm guessing you meant C9?) vs GZ1000 for gaming and movies use cases equally, but the GZ1000 apparently has the edge on image processing with the HCX chipset plus HDR10+/DV support, so if you don't have much consideration for games and only watch movies and TV, lean that way. Games are gonna be the only use case for higher than 60hz on a 4k TV really.

The whole HDMI 2.1 thing is pretty up-in-the-air-hand-wavium at the moment, but I'm hoping with both the next gen Xbox and PS5 launching next year, we might actually see a use for it. Then we can see how good LG's claims are.

In reality though, both are pretty damn good and you can't lose either way.

A small positive for the C9, if you’re an Apple-ite, is that it has built-in AirPlay - and C8 doesn’t. I find this useful for watching stuff like BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub, where the apps are on my iPad, on the C9.

With the Panasonic GZ1000 currently at $3398, I'm mighty tempted...

Was in JB today and got talking to a salesperson, who said that Google Assistant doesn't work on the Panasonics, ie the same lack of local support as per the LGs.
Can anyone with a recent Panasonic OLED TV confirm this either way? Not a deal-breaker, but would be a useful feature.

He also reckons this is likely to be the cheapest on the GZ1000 before it reaches run-out, but I'm assuming that's said to encourage me to buy now. What do others reckon?

Too bad you missed out on my potentially backfiring, get-TV-rich-quick scheme.

If you have the money to burn, I'd go for it. I don't see it going any lower for clearance. Then again, I didn't think it was going to go this low now, so who knows really?!?

The alternative is to wait until CES in a week to see if any 2020 TVs are maybe worth holding out for. Then wait until they have a decent sale, so you are not paying early adopter tax. Or if not, maybe catch it at a similar price on EOL around April. Which is a whole lot of maybes when you could be profiting today.

Unless HDMI 2.1 features set your world on fire, I don't think there are gonna be any massive paradigm shifts anyway.

Yeah, I saw your crafty scheme... on December 26! May have been tempted to try it then...

My biggest barrier is selling this to my wife, who was comfortable to pay $4k for the TV, but we'd talked about doing it in April so thinks we should wait until then - to me, it's already $600 less than what she was ok paying, with no guarantee it'll go as low or lower, so we may as well go for it now. (And I've pointed out that the additional savings are $600 towards a new receiver!)

Nope, HDMI 2.1 doesn't worry me too much; benefits for gaming consoles don't concern me, as the kids' PS4 is connected to the house TV (and they're happy enough with that heinous LG LCD), whereas this OLED is to replace the plasma in the HT.

Are there any other significant sales periods between now and the April-sh run-out period? Waitangi Day seems the only one, and I don't think that's usually particularly substantial.

@jonathan18, I reckon just go for it now. As you say, you are already under budget and 4 months is a a lot of time you could be enjoying your new tv on maaaayyyybbbbeee saving a couple of hundred dollars. I would but I blew my budget on audio, so now I'm going to peer pressure other people into buying things. Doesn't stop me from staring longingly at the 65" GZ1000 in JBHiFi though...

Extrapolating from last year's trends (lg c8 and panasonic fz950 on pricespy), most went a couple hundred cheaper towards end of life, but were floating slightly above/around that price until then. I don't remember Waitangi Day specials being anything standout and the data seems to support that.

So my question to you is have you gotten it? Why not? And why are you not getting it right now?

@ShinyChrome: you have a lot to answer for the application of such vicarious purchasing pressure!

The reason for not buying thus far is a four-letter word starting with w. Nah, actually I've talked to her and she's ok to proceed now, now I've explained the logic to her! The issue is I'm in NP on holiday; the plan is to call into a HN or NL tomorrow to show her, then I can order on the internet.

I also took a careful look at the price trend on the 950; interestingly, that shows the cheapest price while the current model was in the Boxing Day sales - https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?pu=4844262

The JB salesperson was saying they were in the weird position of currently selling the 950 for more than the 1000.

My biggest issue is going to be, once I've sorted mounting (hopefully don't need a new mount or need to shift cabling), is whether I feel the need to upgrade the receiver sooner rather than later, due to no 4K switching on my current receiver; it'll only be Disney+ that is the issue really, as we can use the built-in apps for the others. (I was a dumb-arse and didn't run multiple HDMIs in the wall.)

@jonathan18, did you get it yet? Muwhahaha...

Yeah the FZ950 is a weird one to still have around, especially since it only has HDR10+ and last years chipset. And as you pointed out, it's a hard sell next to the GZ1000.

Well, it's a good thing you can come in $600 under budget for your TV, which you can now put to a new receiver haha.

What are you using for your external streaming? No way to split the audio to receiver and video to TV? Does your current receiver do ARC?

@ShinyChrome: Indeed, your pressure worked!

Popped into a NL's in NP yesterday to show my wife, who was impressed enough to give it the thumbs up. I purchased it there, and will pick up from the PN store in a week or so when it's delivered; decided to do that after realising our credit card offers extended warranties (additional 12 months in this case) if purchased fully on the card... I know the CGA's there, but anyway... (Also, the credit card policy will mean Visa refunds me the difference if it's sold lower at another shop in the next 30 days, so I'm covered if it drops down to $1500 next week!)

I've currently got an Onkyo NR515, which I understand has CEC (hope I'm right). External sources are an older Apple TV, which is likely to get little or no use now given it's not 4K (assuming we'll upgrade to 4K Netflix), and a 4K Amazon Fire TV - it's that we use for Disney. I was going to investigate whether I can simply hang the Amazon Fire off the back of the TV, using CEC for the audio. What do you reckon my best options may be?

I'll also be hitting you (and others here) up for advice on receivers at a later date; I've added the various affordable models that have nine-channel amplification on-board (to let me do 7.1.2 w/o external amplification) - unsurprisingly the most affordable models are from Onkyo and Pioneer, but if I can stretch the budget to $1500, the Marantz SR6013 may be the better option (especially given your comments elsewhere on the unknown future of the other brands).

Whatever AVR you get, make sure you get eARC as your TV can handle it, so you'll be able to stream ATMOS via Netflix 4K on the TV and take the full signal back via eARC.

I believe the LG's won't down-convert HDMI sources to 2.0 due to EDID dramas either, so your OLED will take any source (except for multi-channel PCM until it's updated) back to the AVR too.
