I use the KMart version which works fine and costs $15 for three - might be a different cartridge type though. Might try the genuine ones if I head over to M10.

Sorry to be dumb, but what are these? I mean I can sort of see what they are, but what are they?

The Kmart filters are a pretty average quality alternative - but I have used them quite regularly and they're a lot cheaper. The Warehouse used to sell a generic compatible cartridge as well that was a lot better than the Kmart ones but no longer do. The biggest problem with the Kmart ones is for the first few days the activated charcoal does release out of the cartridge even if you give it multiple flushes before using them.

Here in Lower Hutt our water has been chlorinated since the 2016 earthquake and tastes truly terrible so all the water I drink is from a jug.

The original Brita filters do contain additional filtering (ion exchange resin) to remove calcium and some minerals whereas the compatible ones from Kmart just looked to have activated charcoal in them when I pulled one apart a few years ago. This makes zero difference if you're just wanting to filter our chlorine like I want them for, but if you have hard water that tastes terrible the original Brita cartridges might work better.

I agree the KMart ones aren't as good as the originals, but I find them probably 70% as good and often 50 - 60% cheaper. Our water is fine but these make it a bit better.

Does anyone know if these Maxtra+ will fit into my probably ten year old Brita jug? A quick Google suggests yes, they do.

Yeah I find them fine as well if you just want things like chlorine removed and I can't taste any difference between the Kmart ones and original. What would be interesting would be to try in an area with hard water than tastes terrible and see if how they compare, because removing calcium is a lot harder than chlorine (which just sticks to the charcoal).

The Maxtra+ are just an upgrade to the Maxtra filters, so should fit any jug. When I was at The Warehouse in Petone last week I did see they had Brita jugs on clearance for from memory $29 that came with 3 cartridges which was a good deal.

They're $49 on the website so I don't know if this was a promo or a special just at this store.

In case anyone else has problems ordering at the discount price, you have to register, go into "my account" and join the M10 club in there. Even though the product page seems to let you join it doesn't work.

Figured I'd give them a go since they're the same price as KMart ones. Thanks NightStalker :)

Are Brita filters necessary in New Zealand where the water quality is pretty good? (compared to some Asian countries)

probably not 'necessary' from a health/safety point of view... however, they can make a difference depending on where you are. i live in wellington and work in lower hutt, so i can compare - as @sbiddle described above, l/h tap water tastes terrible and things like these help.

We can't deal with the chlorine smell you get off Auckland tap water after several years on Tank water. Also we get less build up in our kettle and coffee machine.

The Brita water filters make the water taste much nicer than the k-mart ones. The k-mart ones improve from the tap, but Brita make it have virtually no taste, like a good bottled water. I'll probably stick with Brita from here on, hopefully on discount but I'd pay full price given how long a filter lasts.
