With a fairly reasonable following. That's what concerns me, although I hope the more sane readers can see through his love for Trump and make up their own minds.

Thankfully his Trump-adoration hasn't crawled into the Dilbert cartoon...yet 🤞

Trump has strong support. I have NZ friends and American friends who swear he's god's prophet. I wonder if there are non religious who support him. It seems to be about religion - not sure if GZ can understand this. It's not about science and facts.

NOTE DON'T group religion into one basket. Not not all religious like him in fact most religious friends think he's the devil.

I think the number of people in NZ who think Trump is doing a good job would be very minimal. I've never spoken to anyone who says he's fantastic - and in my current job, I interact with a lot of people every day.

The latest "Real time with Bill Maher" show S18E21 is heavy on freedom of speech. He mentions the ACLU and the Harper's weekly letter.

Speaking of the letter, it was signed by more than 150 writers, journalists, academics and artists -- including J.K. Rowling, Noam Chomsky, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie

Harper's magazine "A Letter on Justice and Open Debate"

Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial.

Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts.

But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity.

As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second.

The forces of illiberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy.

But resistance must not be allowed to harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion—which right-wing demagogues are already exploiting.

The democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has set in on all sides.

Push back to Harper's letter, including virtue signaling, and insipid and vacuous thinking like "OK, boomer:"

Los Angeles Times: ‘Cancel culture’ is not the problem. The Harper’s letter is

Has managed to "ban" TikTok yet?

Everything I've seen, says he will do it as early as Saturday. (US Time)

Brush up your Shakespeare ...

The New York Times - Opinion - Double, Double, Trump’s Toil, Our Trouble

Aug. 1, 2020

Demon sperm meets alien D.N.A., as President Trump teeters.

WASHINGTON - Macbeth has his doubts.

But his wife taunts him about his manliness until he bloodies his country.

It’s hard to believe, four centuries after Shakespeare, that the fear of being unmanned is still so potent that it could wreck a country.

But it is. And it has. Donald Trump’s warped view of masculinity has warped this nation’s response to a deadly pandemic.

And Trump doesn’t even have a diabolical Lady MacTrump whispering in his ear, goading him about being a man.

He goads himself, fueled by ghostly memories of his autocratic father. ...

Like Macbeth, the president made tragic errors of judgment and plunged his country into a nightmare.

Our trust in government is depleted, and our relationships in the world are tattered.

As Fintan O’Toole wrote in The Irish Times, the world has loved, hated and envied the United States. But never before has it pitied us. Until now. ...

Alexander Burns wrote in The New York Times that Trump was too pathetic to be a tyrant: “Far from a strongman, Mr. Trump has lately become a heckler in his own government, promoting medical conspiracy theories on social media, playing no constructive role in either the management of the coronavirus pandemic or the negotiation of an economic rescue plan in Congress - and complaining endlessly about the unfairness of it all.” ...

After the president began doing the coronavirus briefings again, he tried a “new” tone, saying he was getting used to masks - “Think about patriotism. Maybe it helps. It helps” - then face-planting by offering good wishes to a past party pal and accused pedophile enabler, Ghislaine Maxwell.

But then things got really crazy as he defended a retweet of a doctor who has promoted hydroxychloroquine as well as declaimed on the existence of alien D.N.A. and demon sperm. ...

Trump proposes delaying America's presidential election due to covid-19. Then China announces HK election is postponed one year due to covid-19 - American administration objects. Facepalm.

freitasm:

Why do you think it is not a valid piece?

I didn't comment on the validity of the piece, I commented on the style of the reporting. Fox News is repeatedly criticised because their political coverage mostly consists of inflammatory rhetoric, and in the case the WaPo's response is its own inflammatory rhetoric, which makes it very easy for anyone who doesn't agree with that rhetoric to dismiss it as biased propaganda. This greatly cheapens or even kills its value as a news source, because it can be dismissed as biased propaganda.

Look at the coverage from the Guardian cited in the next message, it's calm, neutral reporting of what happened. Then compare that to the WaPo's name-calling. Good reporting is non-partisan, neutral reporting of the facts. You can take that and drop it in front of people from all over the political spectrum and they'll accept it, and can form their own opinions. As a journalist friend of mine told me some years ago (long before Trump), "you don't need to tell people he's an a**hole, just calmly report what happened and they'll see for themselves that he's an a**hole". Once you're telling your readers what to think, you're no longer reporting news, you're providing propaganda, and that makes you at best suspect, at worst useless as an information source. Which in turn plays right into Trump's narrative, "they've all biased against me".

In terms of "Grauniad", that's a semi-affectionate term used by the Guardian's own readers to refer to it, have a look at who owns www.grauniad.co.uk. However if people really find it that upsetting I'll refer to it as the Guardian, which seems a bit impersonal to me.

"The Lincoln Project’s plan for preserving the union: Drive Trump out of office by driving him nuts"

Which explains the spectacular rise of the Lincoln Project, a group of Republican Never Trumpers who have moved rent free into the president’s head. Their viral videos and tweets mocking his leadership, his intelligence and his patriotism — aimed both at Republican voters who are wavering and Trump himself — have attracted millions of dollars, via donors from both parties. About 90,000 people showed up for a virtual town hall last month. Lifelong Democrats are organizing fundraisers for the project.

The ads are slick, scathing and more shocking than anything Joe Biden’s official campaign has produced. The newest release, “Wake Up,” is a dark comic satire about a coma victim hearing about Trump’s last three years. “Republicans, we need to wake up. This guy was in a coma. What’s your excuse?”

“Donald Trump is so completely at odds with every institution in America and so completely at odds with anything that the Republican Party allegedly stood for: the rule of law, constitutional fealty, institutions, norms, traditions, all of those things are out the window,” says Rick Wilson, a co-founder of the group. “So you’re either going to make a choice between Trump or this country. We made the choice for the country, even if it doesn’t immediately seem to fit with all of our ideological or political priors.”

“Trump is a narcissist and he cannot help but react to threats to his delicate psyche,” explains Conway. “He is a very sensitive, weak human being who cannot take criticism.” The other factor, he adds, is that “he can’t think ahead. He merely reacts to things. And what we do is take advantage of both of those psychological defects.”

What that means in practical terms is that the Lincoln Project ads are specifically designed to trigger the president. Whenever Trump is reacting to a Lincoln Project ad, he’s talking about things he shouldn’t be talking about. He’s explaining why he inched down the ramp at the U.S. Military Academy, or drank water with two hands. He’s shooting off a tweet about the “Mourning in America” ad, thereby raising millions of dollars . . . for the Lincoln Project.

The Lincoln Project buys ad time in Washington and Bedminster for an audience of one. “He is a creature who exists only on television, the Chauncey Gardiner of our time,” says Wilson, evoking the movie “Being There.” “The fact that we’re able to use his mental infirmity and addiction to television to freeze him and manipulate him serves a broader purpose for the overall campaign in terms of taking him off message, disorganizing and disorienting him.”

“The one thing you can’t get back in politics is time,” says Sykes. “Every day that goes by that Donald Trump is off his game or distracted is a win. He can’t fix that. He can’t go back and get it. What they found is that a single video can take the president of United States off track for a day or more and you see it play out.”
