MotorTrend: Is the Cybertruck the Electric Pickup That Tesla Promised Us?
...
Can The Tesla Cybertruck Float?

Sure, we think the Tesla Cybertruck can float. The catch is, what next? Most vehicles can float for a time, depending on the relative water-tightness of the body and how much air is trapped inside. We have no doubt that, at least for a time, the Cybertruck is certainly capable of floating. It's the very specific claims made by Elon Musk about the Cybertruck's amphibious abilities that have us scratching our heads.

In 2022, Elon Musk suggested (on Twitter, now X) that the Cybertruck could not only float but could also float well enough to travel from South Padre Island to SpaceX's Starbase facility in Boca Chica—a distance of at least several miles, as the crow flies, with a fair bit of water in between.

The confusing part is, if the Cybertruck is weather-sealed enough to float for a several-mile journey over water, how are you going to control it when it is floating—er, sailing?
...
Will There Be A $40,000, NZD $65,000,Tesla Cybertruck?

We won't keep you in suspense: No. Definitely not now, likely not ever in the future. Tesla's ambitious $39,900 base single-motor pickup was always a long shot, and Musk has all but explicitly confirmed it isn't coming. The $39,900 version of the truck was dropped from the consumer website way back in 2021. Given the moving target of promises swirling about the Cybertruck, we might continue to see claims that lower-priced versions could emerge. But don't believe it until you see it. Tesla's site—now that production has actually started—shows $60,990, NZD 98,000, as the entry price, which applies to the rear-wheel-drive version due in 2025. The tri-motor examples shown at launch, which are dubbed "Cyberbeasts," carry a $99,990, NZD $161,200, price tag.

Does The Tesla Cybertruck Have An "Exoskeleton"?

No. The stainless steel exterior panels of the Cybertruck are not load-bearing
...
Will There Be A Single-Motor Cybertruck?

The single-motor Cybertruck was seemingly left for dead along with the original $39,900 MSRP
...
Does The Cybertruck Have Shatter-Proof Glass?

In as much as any modern vehicle with laminated safety glass has shatter-resistant windows, the Cybertruck has shatter-resistant windows. But shatter-resistant certainly doesn't mean they'd be impervious to impact, as famously demonstrated by Tesla lead designer Franz von Holzhausen. He pitched a metal ball at the side windows, twice, and both times the windows were clearly smashed.
...
Can The Cybertruck Go 500 Miles On A Charge?

At its reveal in 2019, Tesla promised the tri-motor Cybertruck—in top-flight three-motor trim—would achieve up to 500 miles of range, due in part to a special double-layer battery pack.
...
the production Cybertruck's specifications, which list estimates for range at 250 miles for the entry-level, rear-drive model due in 2025; 340 miles for the all-wheel-drive version; and 320 miles in 845-hp, range-topping Cyberbeast trim.

Australian and European safety regulators said a few years ago that the Cybertruck in its original prototype form would be unlikely to pass local safety tests and therefore would probably not be road legal in any of those countries. I would assume that also means it probably wouldn't pass NZ safety tests.

Did Tesla ultimately make changes to the design to get around that, or will our roads never be graced with this elegant, refined beauty of a vehicle? 😉

Rushmere:  Musk is sounding increasingly desperate.

His latest public response to the companies that have currently paused advertising on Twitter was "Go fu*k yourself". ...

The NY Times - Illicit Content on Elon Musk’s X Draws E.U. Investigation

18 Dec 2023

The European Union announced a formal investigation Monday into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, accusing it of failing to counter illicit content and disinformation, a lack of transparency about advertising and “deceptive” design practices.

The inquiry is perhaps the most substantial regulatory move to date against X since it scaled back its content moderation policies after Mr. Musk bought the service, once known as Twitter, last year.

The company’s new policies have led to a rise in incendiary content on the platform, according to researchers, causing brands to scale back advertising. ...

The investigation highlights a major difference between the United States and Europe in policing the internet.

While online posts are largely unregulated in the United States as a result of free speech protections, European governments, for historical and cultural reasons, have put more restrictions in place around hate speech, incitement to violence and other harmful material.

Yes, the SmartyPants said that it is "highly likely" that Tesla will make a smaller version for Europe...

"European governments, for historical and cultural reasons, have put more restrictions in place around hate speech, incitement to violence and other harmful material."

In English, "Because of Hitler ..."

Regarding a smaller version of the Cybertruck, Musk originally promised 500 miles of range in the Cybertruck, which is only remotely achievable with the Range Extender. NZ$25,000, or NZ$195 per extra mile of range. In length it takes up about half of the truck bed.

You'll remember there's supposed to be a NZ $62,000 version of the truck.. The cheapest Cybertruck is the rear-wheel-drive model starting at NZ $97,000 with an unspecified delivery charge on top.

Regarding a small European version

I think this discussion should have been settled weeks ago when Elon hosted a live with an indicted sex trafficker and a convicted conspiracy theorist that lied about victims of a school mass shooting.

The man is a billionaire idiot at best, a full-on racist bigot at worst.

Australia’s eSafety commissioner sues X over lack of transparency | X | The Guardian

The Australian eSafety commissioner has launched legal action against X, previously known as Twitter, for allegedly failing to provide information about how it was tackling online child abuse material.

The commission has accused X of failing to comply with a legal notice, issued in February, which requested information on how the company was “meeting basic online safety expectations in relation to child sexual exploitation and abuse material”.

“Specifically, eSafety alleges that X Corp. did not prepare a report in the manner and form specified because it failed to respond or failed to respond truthfully and accurately to certain questions in the notice,” an eSafety spokesperson said.

“It is important that X Corp and other providers are deterred from non-compliance with statutory notices.”

In September, the eSafety commission fined X Corp $610,500 for failing to comply with the transparency notice. According to the commission, X did not pay the fine and it subsequently sought a judicial review of the legal notice and the fine.

Interesting how they can rapidly block anti-government posters/posts in authoritarian countries but won't respond to requests to explain their processes for getting ride of vile CSAM content. Or for that matter block it. And then ignore fines for refusing to answer government enquiries.
