Going to Aus and a cruise. Noted that the exchange rate is good at present around 0.92 for $Aus. I have added $NZ credit to my Wise account for the trip. Is there a way to change that into $Aus to take advantage of the rate? Can’t find a way.

I will be using the Wise virtual cards for Apple Pay and so would want the phones to pay out of the Aus account. Am I doing the right thing?

Thanks for any tips.

You should be able to add an AU$ account and then transfer money from the NZ$ account.

Have done that for our upcoming trip to Canada/Alaska with CAN$ and US$.

Thanks but I don’t know how to do this while the money is already in there in NZ$.

You using an app or the website?

Edit: Actually they're basically the same. :)

On the Home tab where you can see your total balance you should see the NZD Balance below that and any other currency accounts you may have.
If you can see the + New option there click that otherwise you may need to scroll to the end to see it.

Choose Open a balance, choose the currency you want and Confirm.

That will add it and you can then transfer money between your currencies as needed.

It’s very simple.  In the App or web screen click on your NZ$ account and there should be a range of options which will include convert.  Select that then type in how much NZ$ you want to change and you will see how many A$ you will get less their fee, usually ~$1 for smaller amounts. Alternative type in the A$ amount and it will show how many NZ$ will come out of your NZ account.

edited for typos / autocorrect.

On the app, click on the NZD account on the home screen.
Next page should have the balance at the top, with the account number underneath
Below that there are some "buttons". OOne of those buttons will be "convert".

Click that button and you go to simple interface with "NZD" and "AUD" or other currency

put in the amount you want to convert in the NZD window and it'll show you how many Buckaroos you'll end up with.
If you're happy with that, press continue and follow your nose

Oh Duh! So easy, I can see it now. It’s at .92 at present and with the stock exchange there going belly up thought it might be smart to change while still good.

What happens though when I use my phone to shop or the Wise card. How will it know to take from the Aus$ account?

It will default to the local currency if you have a balance for that one, otherwise it will automatically convert from another currency using the current exchange rate.

As far as I remember, an Australian transaction will debit your Australian account and if that is insufficient it will debit any other account with conversion, assuming you have extra funds in other accounts, typically your NZ account.  Of course you can convert additional funds in seconds with the App.

It's a really quite brilliant system and works as well with the app as it does with the physical card.

Thanks all. So now watching the rate and whether ours will climb more or drop. Might put half in Oz$ today and wait out the rest. Any predictions?

On my Wise app, I swipe the NZD with the NZ flag to the left to reveal + New .

Select +new and select Open a balance and select Australian dollar.  Click the X on the top left to close this AUD Balance

Go back to to your NZD balance and select <-> Convert and type in the value in NZD that you want to convert to AUD.  ( the AUD conversion is autofilled )

Select Continue and the Convert.

You should now have money in your AUD balance.

Edit:   Sorry I came late to the party and @Eva888  Glad you had it sussed.

A nice feature is you can also set an auto conversion for a specified NZD amount when the exchange rate reaches the amount you set.

Interested in the reason why everyone uses an alternative card than the aussie owned banks cards we share. It very rarely moves more than about 1c either side of that 90-92 mark in a mass jump.

Since covid they realised the error in their ways and happily let you control the card holding and payment now.

No extra fee on most plat style card types bar current exchange (or 1.3% which is hardly noticeable). And banks have ditched own machine withdrawal fees. 10c to the dollar easy to work out if its a deal and not a huge surprise after the fact.

Am I missing some form of mass saving or security avoidance?

Use to pay the over counter fee before they stopped doing cash and bargain on $80 a day. But normally come home with half of it. So given up now and just take a few hundred in emergency cash and card everything else knowing it's not going to hurt too much given the closeness

I use Wise card when travelling for safety. It means you can quickly cancel a card that’s been scammed and get issued with a new virtual one in minutes. Also, it’s a debit card that is fed from your main bank account where all your ahem millions are and it keeps that bank account at a distance and safe. You just keep feeding Wise from your main bank when you are in a safe not public wifi space.  It also gives you instant notification each time the card is used. So You paid $10 at the Starbucks in North Sydney etc which makes it easy to pick up if anything dodgy happening.
