I love that we get notifications of planned outages (and info about the unplanned ones)

But... surely I can't be the only one who doesn't know all the acronyms

eg

Upgrade POLT software from R6.2.04SP to R6.7.01GA.

So what's a POLT... not that I care really... just curious..

The POLT is what your ONT "connects back to" so to speak (though multiple fibres and a splitter).

Simply means the device your ONT is connecting to is getting a software update. :-)

No, you are not. I asked a similar question in their Discord chat. A link to terms like this would really help.

It's great to have an ISP geared towards geeks, but we too can't know all acronyms; especially telco ones that don't come up in everyday conversations like 'HTML' & 'agile dev'.

Hear what you're both saying in terms of acronyms etc.

However, as the notifications are fully automated and are pulled in from the LFCs, the wording is dictated by the LFCs and what they enter into their systems.

Not all LFCs use the same language or terminology, and we have no idea what may be entered, so not aware of every term they may use, change, stop using or change the meaning of at any time!

Doing a quick Google on what's publicly available, this document does contain a few of them which may help.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, the opposite in fact. .. and thanks for the link.

I suppose the Passive refers to the type of network being multiplexed i.e. a Passive Optical Network or PON rather than the device itself being a passive electronic component.

Did people get told of this outage who are on quic? Voyager mushroom here in the dark about why I have no Internet and will change tomorrow if quic gave adequate warning of it. Even one have put it on their page.

@richms yep, got an email as soon as Chorus (or rather the LFC) had the information a few weeks back and a message is displayed when we check our connection in our Quic account like this:

If it’s an unplanned outage, they update https://status.quic.nz
