Spyware:Does the reception vary with the seasons??, e.g., occur later in summer??
richms: Perhaps they get kicked out of a room by a person they live with that insists on consuming 6pm "news" entertainment? Do you use the TV at other times of the day to know if it happens outside that time?
Otherwise just buy a vodefone tv box and forget that legacy over the air stuff.
My parents had this issue years ago, a neighbour was using an illegal (imported) baby monitor.
Digital TV tends to be all or nothing. If your reception is right on the edge, it can seem perfect but a slight drop in signal can turn it to crap. I have this with my DVB-T.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos
If it only happens at this time of year, there is one possible culprit that has been seen before, but is pretty rare. Faulty street lights can do this to you, especially if your aerial is not providing the best of signals in the first place. Depending on where you are in the country, the street lights will be turning on in the 17:00 to 18:00 range from a few weeks ago until the end of winter. So it would be worthwhile having a look at the nearby street lights and seeing if there is a faulty one. If so, ring up and get them to come and fix it. With faulty street lights, the problem may only be for a while immediately after turn on, or it may happen for the entire time the light is powered on, depending on the type of fault. It puts out signal on a similar frequency to the DVB-T signals on one mulitplex, so only those channels are affected. In your case, the TVNZ multiplex has TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, TVNZ DUKE and their respective +1 channels and all will be affected.

danepak:
The antenna is indeed inside the roof.
Get it moved onto the roof, as high as possible .
TV signal at my house is also marginal .
I have the biggest aerials I could get (within reason) , at the top of the roof, on extention poles.
Signal amplifiers cant help much if the signal is bad to start with, they will amplify the noise as well . They could help with long cable runs & multiple TV's connected
Signal/masthead amps will be 2 part devices. One unit(amp) on the arial , the splitter/power injector near the TV or somewhere in the house .
Chances are your signal amp isnt where you think it is .
danepak: Thanks.
I still don’t understand why it only happens in the evening (and only around 6-8pm, it seems)
The only way you'd find out is hire someone with a spectrum analyser who can help determine that for you, they need to be onsite when its happening. Simplest way of avoiding marginal signal conditions is not to install the antenna in a manner that presents non idea signal, e.g., an iron roof or aluminium tiles blocking the signal. And placing a booster at the TV is a completely pointless exercise that may have satisfied you but performs no beneficial purpose.
Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.
What is the roof made of ? concrete tile or steel ?
danepak: Tiles
Concrete tiles had little effect on the old analogue VHF television signals but I am not sure about UHF.
My daughter moved into a house recently in Whanganui and she wasn't interested in her old Dad fixing the antenna.
She had a chromecast and TVNZ etc on her smartphone and she doesn't miss a thing.
