Hi there

We spotted a Veon 50" LCD TV at the warehouse, marked down from $1899, to $799 we thought it was a bargain and decided to get it.
It has been really nice up untill now.

About 15 mins ago, my father called me in saying that the TV had just switched itself off and won't come on again.
We checked all the connections, we made sure it was plugged into the wall. Everything is connected the way it should, and it should work. Now, we had this Television for less than 4 weeks, and it shouldn't have died on us so quickly. Our old one, now being used as a LCD monitor, despite the antenna jack been broken off and no way of connecting a RF antenna, is 4 years old and hasn't given us any major problems apart from what I just mentioned.


I know that the Television has a factory 2 year warranty, but I'm not sure of they'll have to send the TV away for  a few weeks to get repaired, (I don't want to lose my monitor, even if it's just for a few weeks) or if it's a straight over the counter replacement.
Even if it did get replaced, I'm not 100% sure that I'm keen on getting a replacement of the same TV, because if the one TV died after 4 weeks, who's going to say that the new one isn't going to die after 5, 6 or 7 weeks?

Would they be able be to refund us, so that I can convince the parents to pick up a Panasonic TH-P50U50Z 50" plasma at DSE for $899 instead?

I've never had a TV die on me in such a short space of time, and I really hope we can get a refund.

I would think commonsense would prevail here and they would swap it for another unit straight away.

We decided, we would like a refund rather than replacement.

What's the warehouse's chances of refunding us?

Pretty sure they have a 12 month money back garrantee. Check tehir website to see if they still do this. Always go for a well known brand in the future. eg your Sonys, panasonics etc

warehouse are usually pretty good if you return faulty stuff and ask for a refund. by rights they just need to replace it, but I've never had trouble getting money back instead. its one of the reasons I continue to shop at the warehouse - if I buy a lemon, I don't get stuck with the decision :-)

So take the tv back, tell them its faulty and ask if you can have a refund.

Yeap, they are usually pretty good, which is a reason why I buy from their too. Although today, I had to return something to exchange it, straight swap at the same price, but was mucked around for 20 minutes as they couldn't work out how to do it in their systems.

The Warehouse keep these products at 2x their actual price, at which no-one will buy them, then regularly pulse them down to the actual price so they can legally say it's a sale. The Pricespy price history makes this behaviour obvious.

On a separate note hope it wasn't a power surge and blew the tv.....

Seems odd that it was working and just "won't turn on" now...

The warehouse have some very fine print exclusions to their money back guarantee. Basically anything they have backended to a NZ supplier warranty they will want to repair first. They are within their rights to do this but you never know, you may strike a generous individual.

A friend of mine bought one of those too (I think it was Veon, it certainly was a 50 for about $800 from the Warehouse). He has just returned it (for a refund) and replaced with a Samsung. Much happier. I think the Warehouse TV crapped out after a very short time also.

It's an interesting scenario all around.
They are 100% within their rights to repair the TV, that's the law.
However, you may well get your money back.
In regards to 'back-end' products, I wonder if they will offer a money back guarantee when they start selling Sony TV's? They surely run a rebate scheme similar to Noel Leeming would do... so they won't be keen to give money back on Sony's...

Firstly read the Warrantee document to see what you are entitled to.
Secondly, research the CGA online.
Thirdly, talk to The Warehouse.

On the back of their receipts it says:

"Restrictions and exemptions:
- Product covered by warranty.
- Hygiene product.
- Copyright infringement product."

My bold... 

SO if the product is covered by warranty available to the Warehouse, they can have it repaired instead of supplying a refund. Anything they get from an NZ supplier or overseas supplier that has an NZ warranty arrangement with someone is likely to fall into this category.

the courts generally ignore fine prints if your decision to buy was based on the larger prints

Yep - in this case though the fine print appears to be doing nothing more than clarifying the CGA.
