Really depends on what the source files are as to what will play them. If it is a release from a known encoding group then there is a good chance it will work on most hardware players.
If its some random guys encode of something and they have no idea what they are doing, then even the android based boxes will have problems. There are a few threads about random kodi running ontop of android boxes on here, that would be your best bet for a hardware player that will take an external flash drive and play things. HDDs are more problematic as they take loads of power and often the support for things over 2TB is pretty poor on hardware boxes.
I use a WDTV Media player to play content on my hard drive.
I don't know how you could make a software media player work the way you describe. The only way to play the formats your TV can't handle would be to add a cheap hardware player or a dedicated computer.

Convert the movies to a friendly format your TV will play like .mp4 or .avi
You can use a free converter such as Freemake Video Converter.
What you are asking isn't possible unless you purchase a NAS with transcoding.
You can also try buying a small cheap PC and just have that connected to the TV always to be a media player.
For example: Like this
It could be the codec. My older Sony TV will not play H.265 but will play H.264 fine.
I use a Raspberry Pi with Kodi, it's fine for most of the stuff I have.
