Hey guys.

Looking to buy my mum a multi region BR player for Xmas. Looking around, there doesn't seem to be anything for my budget of $100, so it looks like I'll either have to spend more, or settle for a multi region DVD player.

To be honest, she is probably going to be fine with the DVD player, just thought I would try and future proof.

Any recommendations?

Side question: Is it worth buying DVDs from overseas? Or will it be cheaper just to buy a standard DVD player and buy DVDs here in NZ.

If you are still buying DVDs then overseas from an NTSC country is the way to go IMO, to many issues with 24 to 25FPS pal speed up dvds on the local market.

Bluray solves that, also means you are not buying a media based on a long obsolete 20 year old codec and obsolete interlaced resolutions.

I brought a LAZER Blu-Rau player from PBTech, It's interface is a bit clunky but otherwise it is an excellent multi-country player. LAZER is based in Australia and does offer a mail-order service.

As I understand it, the country code setup is a convention, not set in law so it is not unlawful to convert your player to multi-country.

Many retailers will (if you ask discreetly) zap your player at time of purchase, with a special a remote but may charge you extra.

There are 'hacks' on the web with codes that by using the player's remote you can change the country code yourself.

I buy a lot of Region 2 DVDs from Amazon so a multi-country player is very useful.

A multi zone DVD is easy to find.
A multi zone (or unlocked) blu-ray is extremely rare and usually insanely expensive.
