I'm going kinda nuts with this one.  It all seems so close to working, and yet so far.

I have a media center 2005 system that I've been setting up since the weekend.  It's a rebuild, the origional setup was never stable, and spent most of its time off. I blame some cheap hardware for that Embarassed.  It got a moderate birthday nothing flash, just a shiny intel core2+desktop mbd.  The TV card is an existing hauppauge 150 so this is all very simple right? Smile

Well everything followed murpheys law, and after much time and effort I've got it up and running, apart from the TV.

I got the driver CD download from hauppauge, and used the removal utility, then install util as per the instructions.

The driver now *seems* to be installed correctly, and I can get  FM radio in media center.  I cannot however get TV.

When I hit the 'scan for services' button it comes back in approx 2 secs with (0) services found.  Not enough time for it to *actually* scan for services.

By contrast the WinTV program (on the driver CD download) detects a bunch of channels, and will happily play them.  It also takes about 30-60 secs to do it's scan.

Hunting around the internet has got me nowhere fast  (so far)  I found a bunch of people with similar fault descriptions, and each seemed to have a different 3rd Party software interfearing.  From other TV programs, to chipset drivers.

So now I come to you with a couple of questions:

1) Am I being a noob and missing something stupid?
2) (assuming 1=no) Do I do a clean install of MCE2005 or go to Vista for it's Media Center?

Thanks

did you choose ANTENNA or CABLE when scanning for channels?   It doesnt work if you select ANTENNA from memory  (i'm assuming you're looking for vhf/uhf stations on the 150)

@Nety

I was aiming to pickup analogue TV, and I have it plugged into a coaxial cable that runs to a TV aerial on the roof.

@Regs

Your question points at the answer to question 1 being 'I am a noob'Embarassed:  I didn't see an option in Media Center to switch it.. I just see 'scan for services'

I click this:

and I get this:

If there are more settings somewhere I havn't found them Frown

when i had a PVR500 i would go through  the set up tv signal, choose NZ as the region, 0000 as the postcode, choose manual set up tv (not auto), select Cable as the tv type and then scan for services

there is a guide, with screenshots, on the hauppauge site:

Thanks for that regs: that guide is awesome.  However I my screwup comes at their first screenshot.  There's no 'setup TV signal' link.

All I can do is scan for services Cry

Thanks heaps to both of you for the help/suggestions and insane quick responses Laughing.  I'm going to be stuck away from the internet for the rest of the day, and probably most of the night (I know a geeks worst nightmare),  so I probably won't be able to respond further till tomorrow.

Hmm, damn.  That last screenshot *was* my  Settings\TV menu.  All of it.  The setup TV signal option is just missing. Frown

are you logged on to the machine directly or using Remote Desktop?  apparently this option is missing when you RDP in.

That’s absolutely brilliant regs.  You have absolutely hit the nail on the head.

I intended to use the machine almost exclusively via a media center extender (xbox360 in this case). So as soon as I got the NIC up I moved the machine to its final (headless) location.  It's been almost exclusively setup via RDP, or via the extender (kinda more RDP) since then.

I can't believe you managed to work that out from my description and at nearly one in the morning.

Thank you so much for all this.  The only downside is I won’t be able to test this till I get back into physical contact with the machine later tonight.  But I'm sure you've solved this for me.

I'll drop you a note late tonight to let you know how it goes from here

Many many thanks

Qyiet

I know I promised I would reply last night, please accept my apologies.

The RDP was indeed the cause of the missing option in the settings menu.  However after that I was still getting 0 services found.

I attempted to fix this by just brute force trying all the options in the setup TV signal menu.  and failed.

This combined with a non-tech issue earlier in the evening made me kinda mad at it. So I took a disc image and then reinstalled from scratch.

(I know, I know.. never troubleshoot while angry) I kinda fell asleep sometime while installing SP3.

I know I've been stupid here, I just thought I would keep you informed of my idiocy.

any more success after the reinstall?  not sure why you count find anything on the scan before that though - I havent tuned analog for a while but it was pretty straight forward from what i remember.

perhaps if you still cant get anything in MCE you might like to try one of the other media center apps - mediaportal gbpvr, etc -  to verify if you can receive a signal in any of them.

Re-installing solved all. Laughing

Well, ok.. there were some missions like getting a new mpeg codec, and a glitch with WinXP SP3.. but google solves everything.

The only thing I have left to do is get the TV guide downloading properly, and that's all looking more or less straightfowared.

Thanks again for all the help regs.
