Been having a play with a KDL-40W4500 that someone has a problem using with their laptop.

Laptop only has VGA and the TV is refusing to sync at anything other than 1024x768 over VGA.

I've checked the manual and it states it should handle 1280x720 and a bunch of other resolutions but none of them work from their laptop. Next time i'm over I'll try out my own Macbook over VGA and HDMI but for the moment i'm a little puzzled.

Their laptop is running Vista SP1 and has an integrated NVidia G72 GPU. None of the tools under Vista seem to pick up the correct EDID data from the TV.

I did try booting a live Linux distribution and using "startx -- -logverbose 6" to pull up the EDID information which I've included below

(II) VESA(0): Monitor name: SONY TV
(II) VESA(0): EDID (in hex):

(II) VESA(0): Modeline "1360x768"   85.50  1360 1424 1536 1792  768 771 777 795 +hsync +vsync
(II) VESA(0): Modeline "1280x768"   79.50  1280 1344 1472 1664  768 771 778 798 +hsync -vsync

The TV reports it can handle 1280x768 and 1360x768 but none of these modes will work over VGA.

So has anyone managed to run a recent bravia over VGA at a decent resolution such as 1360x768, or better yet at true 1920x1080.

I have the KDL-32W4500, and i'm pretty sure 1280x800 from a laptop running vista sp1 works fine over VGA, though i get thin black bars either side of the image.
Will try 1080p over hdmi/vga if i get the chance.

I'm interested in grabbing the EDID data for the other sony KLV-40D300A when connected via HDMI, to find the possible modes. If i just grab any linux disto, boot to command line and run that command will it display the modes, or is it logged to a file somewhere?

Get a recent linux distro like Ubuntu or fedora and boot it off CD in single user or recovery mode.

Then run "start -- -logverbose 6"

The "--" is important.

A log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log will be created that contains all of the EDID data.

I'm sure there are windows tools that can also do this.

I have a 46W4000, but I've never tried VGA input. But if I remembered correctly, my TV can only accept up to 1600x1200 over VGA. It however worked perfectly fine at 1920x1080 over HDMI with my laptop (Dell XPS M1330, Arch Linux), though I have to set it to Full Pixel mode in order to get 1:1 pixel mapping. If you are interested in the EDID of my TV, I'm happy to provide it.

I'm sure you can find tools to dump EDID in Windows as well, just google "Windows dump EDID".
