Hey everyone, I already posted about this on the windows 7 thread but nobody responded there so I figured it might be better to make a dedicated thread for it.

I'm running:

AMD Phenom 9750 (long story why - in short it's because I was upgrading from an AM2 cpu which supports some AM2+ cpus)
4 gigs 800Mhz DDR2
Hauppauge 2200 (using the drivers on the disk, as windows update wouldn't recognise the device or find drivers by itself)
Sapphire Ati hd4870 (have tried the drivers w7 installs by default and the w7 beta drivers offered by AMD) outputting both audio and video through the hdmi dongle.
Philips 47" 1080 lcd
Windows 7 beta 7000

I'm honestly not sure if this problem is a windows 7 thing or something to do with my ati video card... maybe someone could direct me to the right place?

The only channels I can tune into are 1, 2, 3 and the HD preview channel. Any other channels have munted-looking green and black squares for their video most of the time. Even the channels that work go all jittery every so often (it seems to get stuck on a couple of frames, repeating those over and over ad infinitum), although the jitter is fixable by minimising then maximising Media Center.

I haven't really tried using h.264 much before. When I first got my tuner card I tried using media portal but due to constant timeshifting errors and other problems I gave up on it and switched to vista media center analogue. Since installing windows 7 I've been trying to get hdtv working.

Looking at old threads suggests that there are issues with ati graphics cards and h.264 acceleration. Is this likely? The old threads I could find didn't seem to mention the hd 4000 range as they were 6 months old. Do the hd 4850s and 4870s still have this issue? According to those threads it suggests that turning down hardware acceleration might help. How do I turn off hardware acceleration in media center? I'm imagining that I might not absolutely need acceleration, as my cpu is pretty decent and supposedly windows 7 is better optimised to make use of quad cores. Either way, it would definately be worth giving it a try!

Any other ideas as to what could be the problem?

Cheers,
Patrick

Sounds exactly like the old ATI Catalyst video driver problem alright... Some claim to have fixed it even...

Sounds like ATI haven't made much progress on the issue - everything pointed to the drivers being at fault.

If the machines a dedicated HTPC - one easy fix is to get a NVidia card, can highly recommend the 9400GT which you can buy for around $100.

Turning off HW acceleration will also provide some sort of fix, but the image quality will barely pass the test - which kinda defeats the purpose of HD in the first place.

Hmm, I was hoping it wouldn't be the video card.

The problem is, it's not just a dedicated HTPC; I use it for gaming too. I almost have the spare parts sitting around to make 2 pcs (I even have a spare gigabyte passively cooled geforce 8600 sitting round), which would be very tempting in terms of noise reduction, but I really enjoy being able to play games on my tv.

And as the graphics card was $500ish I don't really want to shell out a similar amount again to get a geforce equivalent... :O

Where do I actually go to turn down the acceleration in media center? Can't find the option anywhere!

ROCK --->  YOU  <--- HARDPLACE

Not sure about HW acceleration under 7 (or even if you can still turn it off).   Given the changes they have made to the codecs ie Microsoft now has its own h.264 codec I think you might struggle.  You used to just install the PowerDVD 8 codec and not enable hw acceleration.

There are a couple of guys on here who claim to have fixed the issue with certain drivers revisions - might be worth searching a few of the old threads in the Freeview section and getting in touch with them to see if they're using 7...

Well, my hauppauge drivers disk came with powerdvd.... 5... I think. I think I MAY have installed that. Don't ask me why I did it : ) I can't see it listed as an installed program though, so it won't let me uninstall it. Anyway, I'm wondering whether powerdvd 5 is messing with things (Not sure why it would though, doesn't mc7 just use its own h.264 codec?). Some people on some of those older threads seemed to think that the issue wasn't actually with the ATI drivers so much as it was with powerdvd.

Also, people seem to get all sorts of different results with the 64 bit version of 7. Maybe I'll try installing that fresh and see what happens. Cheers for the advice!

Oh and about the drivers revisions thing - apparently catalyst 8.42 worked? But also, apparently it's unlikely to recognise my 4870 as a supported video card. And trying to force it might screw it up.

The only issue is that I somehow doubt that earlier catalyst drivers will work with Windows 7.

True... it seems there are only a couple of drivers to choose from at the moment - Ati's beta windows 7 drivers, and windows 7's own drivers (not sure if they are secretly the same thing or not).

The only thing I can add, which is probably not want you want to hear, it really DOES PAY to separate your HTPC from your PC.

Most successful units DO NOT do both. In best case scenario, if you decide to do some intensive gaming when your missus wants to record her favourite programme & there are playback errors due to high CPU useage, trust me, you will lose brownie points.
