Hi there. So I have a TV with the problem as seen in the picture. I presume it's the backlight, maybe some LEDs have failed. Does anyone know if this is fixable for not too much outlay? I have already taken the back off but there seems to be nothing I can do there and there is no access to the screen. I can't see a way to remove the screen from the front to get to the backlights. I know TVs are pretty cheap these days so maybe a replacement set might be the best option but just wondered if there is a fix or a hack or something I could try first. The model is DSLED55UHDYA which is a 55" LED 4K TV.

It's probably toast. Getting a panel apart to repair a backlight would be a one way street, lots of little clip to break, and the risk of getting dust trapped between diffuser and LCD. And so on.

If you have the receipt and it's less than 5 years old, go to your retailer for a solution under CGA, should you have the time and patience required.

Gidday Sugarpie.

Definitely looks like Backlight Failure for sure and yes can be repaired.

The Job itself is fairly straightforward but does require a large Flat surface that allows you to

lay the panel Flat to allow disassembly and placement of the LCD membrane and other diffusers. And you need to be Gentle and Carefull.

Id start by researching replacement LED backlights for your particular model.

I usually only carry out the repair only if the Panel Is or Was a pretty good rated set. The Cheaper ones i tend to just write off.

Backlight Replacements you should be able to pick up a complete set for around $40 - $60

Theres plenty of YouTube Video's online to give you a walk through.

Cheers

So now half the screen has lost the backlights. I contacted Dick Smith but they don't have replacement strips for my model. Any other options? I can't really afford a new TV even though their are some good deals on at the moment. Maybe someone knows a trick of hack to replace the LEDs with some from another brand? Maybe some generic way of doing it. Any options would be great cheers

There are lots of howto's on youtube.

Most people get replacement strips via Aliexpress.

I guess how difficult they are to repair depends on the TV and how confident you are.

Potentially there is high voltage in the TV even when its been switched off for a while - google capacitors.

So could be quite dangerous....

Your biggest problem is the fact it appears to be a Kogan/Dick Smith branded product.

Obviously it is built be another company - if you knew the original make/model that might help - but I think it would be very difficult?

If you went onto Aliexpress and put a Samsung or LG model into the search, you will likely find the right replacements and as I said - lots of videos on youtube.

You would need to open the TV panel up (possibly breaking it entirely) and maybe you cold see some part numbers on the strips.

I wouldnt hold your breath to be honest....

EDIT - Is it Dick Smith or Kogan branded?

EDIT2: Could be an LG or Samsung panel inside https://help.kogan.com/hc/s/article/AreyourTVsthesameasSamsungLG

Some of those Samsung edge lit panels are effectively unrepairable even for professionals.

If you're broke and using external devices for smarts you could get something used from Trademe.

Yep it's a Dick Smith product - I contacted them but they don't have replacement LED strips for my model and they don't even have a service manual so I could look up the specs. I guess I will have to open it up and see if I can at least find out the specs of the strips and then possibly get some generic ones. I've seen heaps on Ebay but without knowing what will work it's the blind leading the blind

I don't think it's edge lit, it looks like back lit with strips of LEDs. But I could be wrong of course. I won't know until I open it up and check.

Good luck - just be cautious of potential high voltage in some of the components - capacitors can store high voltage for potentially days after being connecetd to the mains.

Watch lots of youtube clips to get some practical ideas.

Hopefully you can see some part numbers etc on the panel or backlight strips.

Post an update on how you get on - its always interesting to hear - even if its a dead end.
