i'm looking at buying a plasma or lcd tv but those guys in HN are shoving a surge protector as well and they are too expensive. what kind of brand do you recommend? and where's the best place/store to buy them..

I have a 6 port one from DSE cost me $35 IIRC and has a lifetime warranty of upto $30'000

are they reliable? those ones in HN or noel leeming are around $400 which i thought were too much for a surge protector.. though the cheap ones' quality might be a suspect..

I use to sell a lot of these at HN and they use to make me a lot of $$$. Why because they work !!!! A car ran into a power pole at my place and i had no damage on any of my appliances. Now for instance the main unit that i sold for $200 is at http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=171213 for $90 and believe me they are still making plenty. These guys should be able to get the unit you want or may well have it.

beachgeek, that belkin unit that you posted, is that something that i should look at buying? and what KJ rating should i be looking at.. sorry for the naive questions, it's just that these salesmen are just shoving things into my face and was saying if i don't have a surge protector, my tv would not be covered by warranty

You should certainly use something. But don't buy a $400 one! That's outrageous. It seems they are moving from offering $500 HDMI cables to power surge protectors now.

I use Belkin - started using those with my old 32" widescreen CRT, through today with newer models. They are all really good with a warranty in case of damage to your electronics. And don't cost $400.

Well if its one of the PureAV range of isolators from Belkin, yes it could. They retail for around this price but once again have huge amounts of margin in them.

I would recommend the PureAV range but as stated above you should be able to get it for a lot less the list. Think I got mine for around 50% of list price but the guy I deal with does look after me.

Don't suggest going for a cheap one they simply do not offer the same level of protection. After spending at least 1k on the TV silly to be cheap on protecting it from being fried.

I like the look of this one - http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=171213 ... I'm thinking of getting one actually. It looks like it covers Ethernet and TV Aerial as well. Can anyone suggest anything better for similar price?

Shall I start a flame war and mention that most of these surge protectors are a load of bumkin and the so called guarantees aren't worth the paper they are printed on ?
All I can say, is don't rely on so called "reviews", and check out a few of the more technically savvy web sites.

There's some useful information on surge protectors in this PC World article Surge Protectors The article is a few years old, but the principles haven't changed.

The Belkin Gold series surge protectors that a couple of people have provided links to, provide a decent level of protection (2,700 Joules) for a reasonable price. The Belkin 8-way unit is available for around $90 from Ascent (or $199.99 from Noel Leeming - you choose). There are a lot of surge protectors available around the $50 which offer 200 Joules protection or less.

Yeah suggested that one in a different thread. I cannot find any pureAV ones now. Not sure if they have gone end of life maybe?

I did also notice these on the Ascent site.

Think if you check you will find it has a over voltage fuse rather then surge protection for that price.
