Hi there,

just need some advice setting up streaming server for Mediaportal in XP.

Basically I have 2 machines, both running XP.

One is the server machine (with client also installed) while the other just has the client.
With the machine with just the client I can watch movies etc no problem, I cannot stream TV though.
The server machine is connected via wireless (the client connected straight to the wireless router).

I have tried opening ports for tvserver, sql server etc but not having much luck. Has anyone done this in either vista or xp and can you tell me how you did this?

What errors are you getting (if any)? Is it the Ports not open error?
Try temporarily disabling the firewall on the Server to see if you can then connect.
I assume everything on the SingleSeat setup (ie Client + Server machine) works fine?

Good point about the firewalls- I'll disable both and see if that gets me anywhere.
The singleseat install is working perfectly.

One thing to note is that when I made TV server a streaming server it didn't ask for a port number at all, just an IP. I'm sure in the past it asked for a port as well..

Oh, it just freezes on the computer when I try and access TV from the client-only computer. Guess I'll check the logs if I find it not working with firewall disabled too..

One way to test is to open the TV server config and go to manual control and start streaming a channel.

You then need to open the stream log file from the advanced menu in TV server and copy the rtsp IP address.
Now on the client open up VLC (VideoLan.org) and open a network stream and put in the details you copied from above. It should start playing the TV stream now.
If not then the problem is on the server.
Try turning off the firewall and test again.

Are you using SQL Express? I think by default later versions are not configured out of the box to support remote (as in from a machine across the network) TCPIP connections. The Media Portal TV Client also needs to talk to the SQL server (as well as the streaming port) so this can cause it problems like you describe (freezing on startup) from remote machines.

Arrggh! 3rd time writing this due to timeouts!

Very abbreviated updates: I am now on win 7 on both machines. Had it working in XP with both firewalls disabled. Now I can't get it working in win 7 even with public/private firewalls on both machines disabled.
I can see the tvguide, but when I try and watch a channel I get "Unable to play: stream4.0". Guess I need other ports open but if someopne can point me in how to set this up in win 7 that would be great.

EDIT: Using mySQL as it seems to be default now in 1.1.0 RC1.

lol - sorry, not really. I think the "unable to play stream" error has been reported as an issue with 1.1 RC1 (might may to check the RC forum over at http://www.team-mediaportal.com/). I myself had it at one point, but it seemed to go away when I configured the streaming server IP address (in TVserver config) to the actual IP address instead of "auto", and then rebooted everything.
