Hi all. I have a Sony STR-DG820 receiver. Last night while watching a BD the center channel audio just disappeared. I went back to a previous part of the movie to check if it was a bad disk, but it still wasn't working. I havnt  had a chance to delve much deeper than that yet, but was wondering if any one had any ideas before I take it back to Harvey Normans.

I assume so as it was working fine and then just stopped, but it will be the first thing I check this afternoon, followed by trying another speaker and then another input. I will also try the speaker test function on the receiver and try another calibration.

This happens occasionaly on my Sony STR DB1080.
I just power it down, power it on again and the Centre channel returns.
I've no idea why.

Strange. It worked fine when I got home yesterday. All wiring was fine. The test function worked ok as well. Will just have to keep an eye on it.

Maybe heat related? Were you driving the receiver quite hard when the centre cut out?

I did think of that. We had the fire going in the room, although we have had it cranking muuuuuch hotter over winter and didnt have a problem then. I was watching a BD from my Sony BD player and had the sound pretty low. Its not a huge room, so it doesnt need to be loud.

The only thing that has changed is I mounted the center speaker above the LCD on the wall raising the height in the room about a meter. (it used to be on the shelf in front of it). Is it possible for a speaker to get too hot and cut out?

Some receivers do need to be reset from time to time... it's just a small annoyance to be honest, but it can happen. Everything from ambient heat to driving them hard (volume wise, or difficult to drive speakers) can cause issues. As can dust build up internally.
If you have a wood burner or similar in the room, ash can build up inside the receiver, meaning it is more likely to overheat and cut out. Have you ever had it cleaner / serviced?
How old is it?
