Hi, just hoping somebody could tell me where to take my player to get it unlocked, this will just unlock dvds, correct? Im in Chch. Cheers.

Panasonic will region free within the first month or so at retailer that can do it with proof of purchase. Or panasonic repair agent. But I DIY'd mine.. for the hell of it.

The trick is getting those keycodes. They are not simply key presses but service codes.

I ended up doing mine myself. Since it was collected from Harvey Norman warehouse I didn't realise it wasn't RF out of box and would need a return trip to the retailer to 'zap' with a pre-programmed remote (also on ebay)

After days of googling I mixed some methods together and created a 2nd account for my Logitech Harmony remote. Added 10 devices the same, with a custom keypress for each one. And then an activity to run all those devices 1 after the other.

POOF. BD player rebooted and it was DVD region free.

Awesome, just happened I had the one for all remote, that the codes were written up for, followed the steps and yes, unlocked. Thanks for the links guys. Just got the second season of SOA from ebay and had no way of watching it, but now, sweeeeeeet..

I hadn't considered that there was a legit way of unlocking the region code of a DVD player, so this intrigues me. I bought a Panasonic DMR-BW880 Blu Ray/HDD recorder, which I understand is locked to region 4 for DVDs. From what people are saying here, you can get it unlocked within 1 month of purchase. Is this true? We won't take delivery of it until we move into our new house, however, which will be exactly one month since purchase, so if it is only valid for the first month, then is there another way to unlock it?

Generally just the 'zap' manufacture designed codes using a logitech harmony or philips remote

Pretty sure you have up to 11 months to get it region unlocked?
Maybe flick Panasonic an e-mail?

I just got around to having my BD60 made region free for DVDs, by Teletech (Auckland). They will do it for nothing if it is still within the guarantee period of one year. You need to show your invoice.

Any authorised Panasonic service agent will do it.

A friend in Palmy went to Tech Electronics in Waldegrave Street.

It was a simple 10 minute do-it-while you wait job.

I bought a Sony blu-ray player last year from the Sony Style store. They set their BD players to region free for DVD when they arrive in the country, before they deliver them to the store, so it works out of the box. Not sure if they do this for all Sony players, or just the ones they sell in their own stores.

I know the thread is about a Panasonic player, but just wanted to pose the question:
Why do some manufacturers do this, and some not?

What do they have to gain (or lose) by restricting this feature (or not restricting it)? Surely they're not still worried about the whole staggered gobal release date thing. Anybody internet-savvy enough to order a Region 1 DVD from a US retailer three months before the Region 4 comes out in NZ will also be capable of googling unlock codes...

The manufacturers that enforce region locking generally have interests in media companies, such as Sony. Their thinking is that by locking things to zones they can better control distribution channels etc., and therefore maximise profit.

A good example of this is purchase of DVDs through Amazon or the likes, which is often a lot cheaper than buying in NZ through the local agencies.

I bought the DMR BW880 last July and have been very happy with it but I bought a TV series on Blu Ray from Amazon that isn't availiable on Blu Ray here and some of the seasons are region locked. I want to get the blu ray regions unlocked, I took it to a Panasonic service agent who said that she couldn't unlock it without doing something illegal. WHY would Panasonic allow you to unlock the dvd region code but not the blu ray? It frustrates me to no end and now I can't watch the middle two seasons of this show. Can someone tell me whether it is possible to get the blu ray region unlocked? I don't really care if it is done illegally or voids the warranty either so if you have any info it would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll find this is standard. The bluray side of things is locked across the board and on PS3 etc. Purhaps there is a software fix for htpc's as such but no, I really doubt you'll find anyone who can do this for bluray without a hardware modification.

It is much harder to unlock a player for BD. I have a US PS3 and so I cannot play any Region BD's on it. In fact up till now all I could do was rip the BD and re-encode it as BDAV so I could watch it.

Similarly for my Oppo BDP-80 BD player. It's locked to region A but I have purchased a hardware kit (some circuit board that plugs in without soldering) that will unlock the player for all DVD and BD regions. I got tired of ripping discs for those region B titles I occasionally order from Amazon UK.
