Hi everyone, i need some help with my sound on my pc i just built. The mother board is an Asus P8z68-v pro with a Intel i5 2500k cpu.I,m using the spdif optical out to connect the sound to my Yamaha AV amp. I only get sound for about 3 seconds when i turn the amp on then it goes quiet. I have latest drivers installed and bios. The HD sound is set to spdif in the bios. It has the Realtek ACL 892 sound chip which is supposed to support 192khz/24 bit true BD Lossless Sound for my bluray player. Any suggestions would be much appriciated.
What video output do you use (ie on board HDMI, extra video card) and what else do you have connected? What model is the Yamah AMP? I'm not personally familiar with the MB mentioned but there will be a combo of things that you need to get right with both the Windows sound playback options (Win 7 I assume), possibly video driver settings and the AMP settings. It is probably just a matter of fiddling around a bit more.
Best option is HDMI through AMP then to TV if that is possible. Also (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) but I have a feeling you can't get 192/24bit via optical, Only HDMI I think. Maybe it's just the HD audio streams that I'm thinking of...
I,m using built in graphics via hdmi to my amp which is a Yamaha RX-V1067 then is output to tv.Using windows 7 professional. The realtek HD Audio manager shows digital optical output and when i play sound the bar graph in display show,s it is recieving signal.. Almost thinking getting a soundcard which has full HD sound to match my amp via hdmi 1.4, card i was looking at says it supports HD sound via spdif too
I think the main problem is that the AMP is getting audio signals via HDMI and Optical and it will prioritise the HDMI signal even if it is not getting a true singal (ie just noise)
Can you try removing the optical cable and is there an option in the Realtek setup to output via HDMI? Also check what options are available under the "sounds" "playback" settings. Audio via HDMI will give you the best result so it is worth persevering with those settings.
If you can't get proper sound via HDMI you will possibly need to plug the optical cable back in and set your AMP to ignore the HDMI audio (somewhere in the setup menus)
Have tried that, set to hdmi in bios, but no sound at all.Took computer to pc shop they got sound from hdmi when connecting to monitor with speakers in it and said only the spdif will support HD sound on that mobo, .Might try disconnecting hdmi plug and just leave optical in
Hmm. Does seem as if you are limited to SPDIF then for now. Your way should work too though if you can get the amp setup to use the optical audio input, it might mean less input switching depending on what else you have plugged into your amp/tv.
I'm 99.9% sure though that spdif wont do DTS-HD or DolbyTrueHD.
As above optical CANNOT output HD audio (DTS-HD or DolbyTrueHD). HD audio can only output over HDMI or be decoded onboard and output via analogue outputs. For SPDIF you must set it to 48kHz or less. You need to take the SPDIF link out and just route the audio via the HDMI cable to get HD sound. SPDIF is far inferior to HDMI for audio.
Also you have not mentioned where you are sourcing the HD audio from? What software are you using? Is the source Bluray?

i was using the basic version of power dvd9,and trying to get sound from bluray player. Also tried windows media player to try basic music too.Only way i can get sound from hdmi is to connect it to a monitor with speakers in it.I have ordered a new sound card which comes with full version of media theartre.. I,m a bit confused why the manual says "absolute pitch 192khz/24 bit true bd lossless sound "
I run a similar setup at home, I've got a gigabyte z68 motherboard with optical out, haven't touched a thing in the bios and I output using winamp (and vlc on occasion.), it has an option to select output over the optical out and on my amp (Yamaha Rx-v367) it will output the sound instantly, I switch between the 3.5mm jack and optical on a regular basis. I do not do hdmi out to the amp at the same time though.
Does your monitor connect to the pc through the amp (hdmi) and does the amp have an option to switch audio inputs for a video source?
Another potential option is to get a video card with hdmi out, any basic Nvidia or Amd card these days will do full hd audio out over hdmi along with video to your Hdmi receiver.
yep i,ve switched the audio input to match the video input, my monitor is connected to the mobo and the hdmi goes to amp then to tv via monitor out on amp.. i looked at video cards but prefered a dedicated sound card for bluray,. my previous pc connected to amp with coax digital cable, but had no bluray
So what soundcard did you get? There were only ever a couple that did HD sound and they were very expensive. They have now gone the way of the dodo now that both NVidia and ATI support HD sound via their videocard's. You were right in that using the basic version of Power DVD was not going to work but I think you should have just got TMT and a home theatre suitable video card.
