Now this has come up when trying to access HP's Recovery Manager rebooted to try and factory reset:

I have no external peripherals connected to it except for the mouse.. Tried unplugging that too but still to no avail...

Could be hard drive failing. Could be the controller. Check hard drive controller settings in the BIOS. Should identify the main HD as a SATA in HD info and should have SATA enabled in system configuration.

Can you get into the BIOS? Boot from USB? Boot from CD?

Run SMART tests from bootable USB (Hiren's, again :).

The GPU is faulty probable cause is overheating which has damaged the Radeon Discrete graphics chip.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm in the HP Advanced Diagnostics menu off of a reboot and will do all the tests. This will probably take a while as the Start-Up Test is estimated to last around 30 minutes!

Looks like the Short DST test failed and a quick search on Google revealed that I should replace the hard drive. That was a 1TB HDD! May look at replacing it with an SSD. Also probably explains why the recovery partition didn't work.

Is it okay if I download the corresponding Windows 7 from this site here and just reuse the product key from underneath the laptop when reinstalling Windows?

It should be, but last time the movers damaged one of my laptops and we had to get a new HD, the downloaded version of 7 required phone activation. No biggie, you just may have to speak to a person. Also, you will not have a recovery partition on the new drive and you will have to download all the required HP drivers.

Is it worth spending serious money on a laptop of this age?
If you buy a SSD it MAY improve performance and fix your problem - but the SSD would probably cost more than the laptop is worth.

If you buy a SSD it MAY improve performance and fix your problem - but the SSD would probably cost more than the laptop is worth.

If you're talking about the laptop, it's around 3 and a half years old. Luckily parts are replaceable and since friend isn't using it for a lot of intensive stuff, just basic home stuff, I think a new HDD (and maybe a new battery) would make it almost new again.

That's a good drive. I have one in one of my laptops. Worth the extra $20 for the 5 year warranty.

That model is the WD7500BPKX though, so it's SATA3, not SATA2. The WD7500BPKT is the SATA2 black. I think the DV6 is SATA2 though, so it doesn't matter anyway. The faster drive will still work, but if it's a bit cheaper it's probably better getting the T model.

Ah so it was a PB Tech error. :-)

Looking at the T model on Pricespy, no reliable retailer are listing it and the rest are above $100 anyway. I guess the special on the X model at PB Tech is pretty good then!

Because its BS .
Possibly burst transfer of the HD's internal cache only . Even then, possibly still BS.

The speed of the interface is not the same as read/write speed.
