My wife's work providers her (and colleagues) with Samsung Tablets (running Win10) that charge via USB-C.

They also have work (lease) pool cars that are used when visiting clients; these cars have USB ports built-in, but apparently these "aren't reliable" (the IT depts words), and can't/won't/aren't allowed to be used for charging said tablets.

Needless to say, some people have tried, and sure enough, they don't charge that well.

Most obvious reason (in my mind) is that those USBs don't deliver the 5V at 2.xA the tablet's probably need - they probably only provide 500mA or 1A (given they're probably really only there to link to Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay).

---

So the question I've been asked by the other half is would a PowerBank work to allow some recharging "on the road" when required.  She has a (10,000mAh) PowerBank that does supply 5V at 2.1A (and also supports whatever quickcharge protocol uses 9V & 12V at other current levels, judging by the specs on the bank); and apparently this does work on her tablet.

However, the "IT Dept" won't recommend this, or allow "official" purchases of similar devices by colleagues, etc.

---

Does anyone out there regularly use a PowerBank or similar to charge a "tablet PC" over USB-C ?  Would the collective geek-wisdom consider this to be a reasonable way to "top up" a Tablet PC in a car?  Or does anyone have an alternative idea?

I don 't really know how much you can / should attempt to draw / supply via a cigarette lighter socket in a car; some sort of solution involving a 240V inverter seems overkill (and difficult!); but would a "good quality" cigarette-lighter USB charger thing work well enough?

Thoughts appreciated!

Cigarette lighter sockets are usually rated at 10A in most cars. They have to heat up a cigarette lighter if used for their original designed purpose.

I often run a 240V inverter off my one to charge laptops, so a USB adapter is not going to cause any overloading.

If the tablet uses USB-C an inverter is probably not necessary, I'd expect a standard 12V USB-C PD charger should work fine.

Something like this would probably suffice: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPPMOX00069/Momax-USB-C-PD-Fast-Charging-Car-Charger-Dual-port

It'll do up to 36W using a USB-C to USB-C cable, and I don't expect a tablet would draw more than this.

Samsung provide genuine accessory car fast chargers. In this case genuine is the way to go imo.

Tell the IT department to provide a solution if they wont support these other options. Plenty of chargers for ciggy sockets will provide 2.4 to 3 amps which is about all you can get over USB at 5v. Get one with a captive USB C cable on it so there is one less point of failure

Yup; that's the idea - she's collection info/researching in order to suggest something.  She's somewhat low down the food-chain; doesn't work in or report directly into head office; so getting official "buy in" is an issue.  Also communication isn't great from the IT dept outwards, so they may already have a solution in progress.

We'll see.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

It's a USB-C device that's expecting a USB-C PD input. You can't just plug this into a regular USB-A or a non PD USB-C charger as this will supply insufficient voltage and current to charge it.

So the simple answer is yes there are plenty of options to charge it on the go. A 30W PD car adapter will cost around $25 upwards depending on brand. There are also plenty of options for USB-C PD powerbanks that will supply over 30W PD but expect to pay a lot for one in NZ - I have a 45W 20,000 Omars buy you can't buy them in NZ.

I don't know where that device gets 36W from - the specs only show it delivering up to 18W, but it can possibly deliver 18W over both USB-C and USB-A simultaneously.

That won't be any use at all for the OP as I'm pretty sure the Samsung tablets need 30W PD to charge (15V @ 2A PD profile) . That's incapable of delivering that.

If you want a powerbank this is the only one in the NZ market that I'd personally recommend that will meet your requirements https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/cygnett-chargeup-pro-20000mah-usb-c-laptop-portable-power-bank-black

It's incredibly overpriced in NZ (I have the Omars from Amazon which is the same OEM manufacturer and is only US$39.99 and picked up another one when I was there last week for somebody) but you don't have many options since these can't be shipped either domestically or internationally these days.

If you want a car adapter this is my recommendation (which I also have) you may find the same thing cheaper from other sellers, I'm pretty sure when I picked up another one a while back it was only about US$12.99 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33014329644.html
