Talkiet: Cool - glad it's working for you now... Always a little annoying not to find out the root cause but it's always good to have things working properly even if you don't know what bit you hit that made it work :-)

Cheers - N

Sorry to keep brothering. Nothing has been changed, but now the video quality is poor. In other words, the speed of the internet connection limits the ability of providing HD/higher resolution picture quality as before. And when I streaming movies alone, it seems require longer time to buffer and movie stop from time to time very often. (Tried Apple TV, Hulu Plus and Netflix)

I also realise that my internet connection is connected to Telecom Christchurch server. Is it correct? So there is no telecom server in Auckland?  Cheers, Benny

Surely to watch Hulu Plus and Netflix you are using a VPN? If that's the case then back to the drawing board - it could be ANY THING in the world and completely outside Telecom as the VPN is not their service.

Yes, I use VPN. But I also tried ITunes Store NZ and YouTube. It is not good too. On YouTube, after clicking a video, it usually does not load at all at the beginning, I have to refresh for 2-3 times, it then can load. Then depends on the video quality I chosen, the video may stop from time to time during streaming.

What are your modem line stats?

A speedtest to Telecom's server with your VPN disabled would be useful too.

Are you downloading torrents over the VPN by any chance?

My line status is OK with download speed 10M. The speedtest shows between 8MBps and 9MBps. I tried to disable VPN, it is the same, no improvement.

Telecom support told I am connected to St Helier cabinet server in Auckland, which is within 5km of my residence. Why the ping test and speed test all point out that my closest server is in Christchurch? Does anyone know that? Would that be the reason?

As others have mentioned, using a VPN to get to the other side of the world is going to hurt performance a LOT.

To add to that... Are you using the assigned Telecom DNS servers? If not, there's a good chance that your Youtube performance won't be good.

Also, if you are browsing generally through the VPN, you can expect awful performance compared to directly.

I have no idea what you mean by "Telecom Christchurch server". We have hundreds of servers in Christchurch, and hundreds in Auckland. Do you mean DNS or what?

I suspect your slowness is probably down to the setup on your PC, or unrealistic expectations.

I'm more than happy to provide advice, but every time you go to post about bad performance, please run the speedtest at

http://speedtest.telecom.co.nz/

IMMEDIATELY before you post and include the results in the post. You should also definitely include whether or not you are using a VPN, what DNS servers you are using, and if there are any other computers attached, and whether you are using a wired connection to your router, or wireless.

Cheers - N

I think he means when he loads Speedtest it shows the CHC test server by default.

I still think the OP is doing tests, downloading stuff while connected to a VPN. That will hurt a lot and nothing to do with Telecom.

Don't use speedtest.net unless you want to check performance to international locations... If you want to troubleshoot what feels like a generally slow connection, I need you to start out only using the speedtest server I have quoted.

The reason that the speedtest.net speedtest sometimes seems to pick a server further away from you can be for many reasons, none of which are particularly relevant here.

I used to when I was with Vodafone. No problem. Right now, I do not even dare to think about it. Torrent downloading is on a separate computer.

BTW, I use playmo.tv for VPN. (Just change DNS to two nominated addresses)

If you really want, I'm prepared to spend 15 minutes and remote into your PC to see if this issue is an obvious one... If you're keen, you can trust me, drop me a PM here and we'll go from there.

OK, please post the rest of your line stats to give it some context.

If you are 5km from your cabinet, that may well be your problem, but post the stats, and that can then be ruled out.

My DNS leaves as automatic as suggested by Telecom support. Christchurch server means speedtest automatically chosen as the nearest one to perform the speedtest.

I tried speedtest.telecom.co.nz, it give me a slower result about 7MBps.

zpempire:  Torrent downloading is on a separate computer.

You don't have another computer running that is grabbing all your bandwidth do you?

If you are doing any sort of testing (including speedtest) then it should be a wired connection to your modem, nothing else running on the computer, and no other computers connected, or else the results will be meaningless.
