Yes, good point Cokemaster, that is usually the case.

In TCL's case (talking residential lines here), they charge you an extra $20 I think it was if you move away from Direct Dialling your Tolls through them. And they charge you an extra $10 for your line rental if you don't spend a minimum $20 on tolls in any particular month.

I would never recommend anyone to rent their residential line from TCL for this reason.

Then again, I had some friends who were still paying Telecom 71c per minute for land-to-mobile calls just because they didn't know Telecom had any better plans on offer (and Telecom hadn't bothered to tell them). They were rather annoyed about this when it was pointed out, and decided that Telecom didn't deserve their business so are now happy customers of WxC, paying 35c per minute for exactly the same calls.

Going really off topic here:

I've been looking at the Business landline option on the Telecom website, doesn't the business lines have capped calling to NZ landlines/025/027 (1 hour to 025/027 for $1) as well as some international locations? Wouldn't that balance things out a bit?

That could save a bit if you made a lot of cellphone calls as the current rates for calling cellphones is a tad steep.

Apologies Cokemaster for my earlier Apples with Oranges comparison, you made a good point there

So, this time I will stick to comparing Apples with Apples i.e. renting your residential line from Telecom:

Telecom offer 2 hours landline calling anytime for $2.50.

WxC will only charge $1.99 for 2 hours calling at anytime.

This is more than a 20% saving which adds up if you make a lot of lengthy calls to other NZ landlines.

Having said that, Telecom's Freedom plan is currently a unique offer in the market, so as always, it pays to look closely at your calling patterns when shopping around for the best deal.

You're right, this would be a consideration for some businesses who happen to have all their staff mobiles with Telecom, and a majority of customer mobiles using Telecom.

In the real world though, most businesses call a mixture of Voda and Telecom mobiles so it doesn't work out quite so well.

Nevertheless, to give the Telecom CSR his due, he did mention this offer, and I did consider it. In our case, I worked out that the $18 per month saving in line rental was more valuable.

Take the 3 minute hour for example, now that was a direct copy of Vodafones 2 hours for $2.

From Memory its the otherway around, took Vodafone a few days to bring out something similar.

Vodafone UK launched it first then Telecom knew it was coming to NZ so then they launched it and then Vodafone NZ did a few days later
