As I understand it, T/C wholesale wouldn't own the last mile copper, that's the network company.  If an ISP installs equipment in an exchange via LLU, it is bypassing T/C wholesale, NOT the network company.  Only way to do that is cable a la TCL or wireless.  No-one would dream of planting more copper.

T/C wholesale would be essentially Telecom's fibre backbone network connecting all the exchanges to the internet.  Right?

I note the following quote from Juha in todays dominion post.

The separation of the UK incumbent, BT, was the model for New Zealand, Cunliffe says. There are however several improvements made to the British model, according to Cunliffe, such as the IOG. Telecom's incoming CEO, Dr Paul Reynolds who left BT this year, was very helpful in working out the separation agreement says Cunliffe. Overall, Telecom has been cooperative rather than obstructive as in the past, the Minister says, as "they changed their minds" during talks.

So I guess this does not say good of Theresa?

Have to be a bit careful with the absolute terms here... the Dominion Post story is obviously based on something, and just because that something is denied, it doesn't mean it's automagically wrong. Shades of grey here.

From what I can tell, Telecom wants to sell the network component. Can't quite see the rationale for that beyond a quick one-time cash injection for shareholders, and I'm not convinced it's possible to sell it without law changes, but there are probably good reasons that I'm not aware of.

Something to do with the NGN, perhaps?  How does that fit in?

Ah yes, the NGN... wasn't that supposed to be in place already? Seems to be part of the regulation now too.

Doesn't the NGN involve installing VOIP hardware on client premises and then putting TCP/IP over the existing copper?

Haven't had anyone knocking on my door wanting to install anything in my house, so I presume that's a fair way off, yet.

So you are you saying that the sale of the network will include a network that has 600 less exchanges than the 700 it currently has, but has several thousand fibre fed curbside cabinets filled with lotsa alcatel goodies and all the current copper hanging out the otherside. If thats the case then the $3Bill seems reasonable.

So a lot of the old equipment and network has probably been significantly written off, then they sell it...hmmm.

so if the government were to buy the network, that would mean along with Transit and Transpower we would have .....Transcomm?

heaven help us......

Just out of curiosity - what do commentators here understand the NGN to be? I always thought the NGN that Telecom referred to was the Juniper network core and riverstone edge switches - which have been in for about 2-3 years now.

I think thats just part of it, ie the part that gives a IP core, but the rest consists of Fibre to the curb/node using Alcatel 7330 ISAM with ADSL2+ to the copper.

I was basing my understanding of the NGN around this:

There's also a big pdf on NGN consultation here: http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/ngn_consultation_june_2007.pdf

Cyril, Jonc - thanks!  Great stuff.  The PDF particularly is very informative.  Cheers.

Interesting to note in the PDF that the VoIP, fibre to the cabinet, ADSL2 projects all come under the term "next generation broadband".  The timeline on pg 24 is very informative too as it gives an idea of all the steps that have been going on since 2000 up until now. Wonder how much impact being unbundled, restructured, and regulated has had on getting major projects like this finished?

great piece of info - thanks again;-)
