yitz: Vocus are routing via Hawaiki going by the 10 ms increase in ping (33 ms trans-Tasman over Hawaiki)

Where are you getting this info from? I am also noticing this and would like to know where I can go to find this info.

I got an email from Bigpipe Thursday morning at 10:25am that said:

I hope you're well.

Our backend team has come back and advised there is no fault with the network. We'd recommend trying a different UFB-compatible router to test out

Please let us know how you get on!

I responded with:

The issue resolved around 1030pm last night. There was something up with the SCCN cable to Sydney so people on the Spark and subsidiary networks were getting routed up to Hawaii and then over to Aus.

I got a response this morning:

Thanks for letting us know it is resolved.

Have a good day. :)

It's a bit annoying when someone in the know can provide them with the answer but nothing will change in the future. Sometimes things break or mistakes happen, I can understand that. But if there's a rerouting of traffic that increases ping it would be nice for providers to at least acknowledge on their website or some sort of social media.

@Shaunwgtn a change in latency does not always mean a fault further to this unless you have a SLA agreement with your carrier then it is best effort

St1ick: Where are you getting this info from? I am also noticing this and would like to know where I can go to find this info.

It is shown as part of the network diagram on the vocus.co.nz website the middle cable that splits off-shore. 33 ms trans Tasman is characteristic of two way latency over the Hawaiki cable with Southern Cross and TGA being about 25 ms. I assume you're on Orcon/Slingshot? From what I can tell they use it for overflow traffic at peaks, possibly the 2degrees merger has meant more traffic in the past month therefore more overflow to this cable at peak times?

Thanks for this. Yes, I am on Orcon. How do you know when they have switched to a different cable? Are you just guessing because I can't seem to find anything on the vocus site that tells you the current status.
Sorry if I'm being blind...

I think what they are getting at is that we know the latency of the different cables to known servers trans-tas.
if its 20-24 its gonna be SCCN, +3-5 will be TGA (or SCNext), +10 will be Hawaiki.

So while its not announced, since we deal with these latencies on a daily basis, we know anyway.

My views aren't that of my employers and all the usual.

I know that I know nothing, so really, I know everything?

Yes, just guessing based on monitoring 😃 I don't think any NZ commercial ISP publishes their network link utilisation statistics publicly.

Something like those screens in that photo on the linked page... 😉
