Rather crap service from Telecom Store in Centre Place Hamilton too. I was wanting to move from my CDMA Nokia 6585 to a new HTC Desire.
I'd already called another store earlier in the day to find out if it would be an easy process, and was quoted at $20 for a sim card with no credit. However their addressbook transfer system was apparently not working leading me to go to Centre Place. This ended up having no difference in the end as i'll explain.
I was told by the sales rep there it would be $30 for a sim card to transfer my number over with no extra credit. Upon questioning this with the $20 figure, he corrected himself.
He couldn't get the computer to add Prepaid Broadband 500mb to my account, but for some reason persisted with trying to add it when i told him twice i'd add it manually myself later on by calling up. He also persisted in questioning whether the device would work on XT. I had stated multiple times that Telstra NextG (the branding of the Desire) was the same as XT, the phone had the right bands (saying 850mhz WCDMA seemed to confuse him), and that many other users had this device on XT - and to just make the transfer and give me the sim. Its rather frustrating to have this ignored, as if he thought i was stupid. After telling him all of this, he continued to question it when the phone was (not surprisingly) missing from telecoms IMEI database (which he got to on the telecom site using the keyword 'GSM Check' in search...). Its sad when sales reps don't know the right terminology, and that telecom doesn't have GSM at all.
Positive note is that he said he wouldn't charge for the sim card and i just got a $40 topup - as it should be. I don't know why i was quoted $20/$30 for a sim card when im already with telecom and have a phone number etc in the first place. When i joined the CDMA network years ago with a second hand phone it cost me nothing at all for a new number and they gave me $10 credit (without even asking). Sim cards aren't exactly expensive and i thought they wanted people to move over to XT?
The above were minor, but then the bit that annoyed me was when it came to transferring contacts. He said that there was no way they could be exported to any kind of file or similar from the nokia, but stated they could be emailed to me in plain text, and told me to to do something for 10mins, as their 'system' for it was in use (a netbook behind the counter with a bunch of data cables plugged into it)
Coming back, i find hes gone home for the day, and i had to explain to the other staff that my contacts were meant to be emailed. Thats bad service for starters, at least tell one of the other 3 staff who aren't doing anything what the situation is and ask them to take over. They called him up, and he told them that he'd done it and that they had been emailed to me. Or perhaps just told the other sales guy to say that to make me leave, because i never got the email. I noticed my phone was in the exact same position on the desk he had put it when i left the store. The fact that the 3 other sales staff behind the counter had no idea if it had been done or not further makes me think he didnt even attempt it. I ended up typing in in all my contacts manually. Not happy about this - if you cannot or won't do something, say so - thats fine, i work in a retail store myself and sometimes customers will ask for too much or the impossible, and you have to refuse. But don't lie about it and waste my time. I'll keep the sales rep publicly unnamed (however will be happy to say in a PM if i can find my receipt). Not impressed.
