Jeez... it would be nice if they maybe waived the fee for launch day or a couple of days after. Or offer a free connection for people switching from cdma to wcdma or from Voda (which they may do, who knows).

You get $10 credit with it and another $10 registering online, not sure of the T+C behind it, assume for new customers only? If you want to keep your number it's probably different... Only caught my eye, I didn't look into it in detail.

Just noticed that.

Also noticed all the prepaid mobiles come connection included which bumps the list price up understandably.

Morning, I can load the brand new looking testdrive.co.nz but Telecom.co.nz seems to be suffering congestion at the moment

Am I the only one who questions the fact that Mr. Hammond is still inviting us to "test" the new network? You'd hope it'd been well and truly tested already...

Obviously they mean "see if it's better for you than the alternative(s)" or somesuch, but still... :)

I'm looking at the site (sloooowly) now, and the 'Combo' plan for $14.95 (20mins) a month from the press release isn't an option in the mobile store section. Anyone figured out the deal on that one? I'm don't want to pay $30 a month for minutes I won't even use :/

They have, to their credit, tested the hell out of the new network, and testing is ongoing.

This in itself should mean they will have far fewer teething problems than others have/will have.

The trend over many years is to let the equipment supplier to test the network they provide, trouble is that they dont test very hard (who wants to reject their own network). Customer "testing" is another trend, whereby the network is pushed out and then customers complain about issues which are then (hopefully) addressed. I am not talking only about cellular networks here.

No, quite a disappointment considering most people will need a new handset.

Went into the jam-packed Chch store to get my long awaited phone.  Got it relatively hassle-free, just a little disappointed they have got rid of the 'go one-bill' plan which was basically pre-paid but added to my home phone bill.  Seems a little silly to me, as there were times when I would spend more on my account simply because it got added to the home phone bill, but now the phone will just run out of credit.

Still waiting for my old phone to flick over to my new phone too!

TheBartender: I'm off the boil here...just posting my response and there is 20 pages of replies already!

Looking at the data options, there is nothing to interest me, especially if I am to compare Telecom's offering against Vodafone's largest mobile 3G broadband offerings:

Telecom: 3GB = $84.95 (available on Prepay or Account)

or

Vodafone: 3GB = $79.95 (On Account, wiith no term) with double data (another 3GB) for just another $10

Vodafone: 3GB = $69.95 (On Account, with 24 month term), with double data (another 3GB) available for just another $10

Appears there is no contest...Vodafone is not only cheaper, both on plan and without, substanially cheaper on a 24 month term, but also offers substanial more data for only $10 more.

At first glance, looks like I will be staying with Vodafone...but I will look into this more over the coming days...see how Vodafone responds (if at all)

OK, just reading a bit more in-depth...

Ugh!

I hate the way both Telecom and Vodafone, market their larger broaband plans, as if they are designed for laptops only...and not for mobiles...

Anyway...I notice Telecom's new XT network too does include 'double data'...but at an extra cost of $15...thas $5, or 50% more expensive than Vodafone.

So Telecom is offering nothing different from Vodafone, and its all more expensive.

It's ashame they don't have an addon similar to Vodafones Family.

I know they have gorup calling, but this is more business targeted with a high price tag.

Vodafones 1 charge of $20 a month for all 4 people to talk/txt/video call each other is a great deal....

I don't think there is an arguement...Vodafone still lead the way with pricing, short of 1 or 2 exceptions.

Must say I am dissapointed with the XT offering, and further still with Vodafone for being so slow to move on data caps and pricing.

Actually I'm a bit disappointed too.

I'm a prepaid customer on the CDMA network at the moment. I top up with $10 every month. Some months I use the whole $10 on texting, and so I get the $10 text deal - I've paid for 50, so they give me 450 more for free. Other months, I only send a few texts and only use a couple of dollars. I don't make calls or use data either, mostly due to a lack of need and the high cost.

I mean $6 TXT150 is all very well, but it's only 150 texts. That's more than enough for the months I text a little bit, but not enough for the months I text a lot.

$12 TXT600 is $2 extra. Sure, it's the same value for money - but it's still $2 more expensive. That's $24 a year more if I were to use it every month. Regardless of whether I get more texts for more money, it's still more money and that makes it less attractive.

Phones are cool though.

Edit: I have forgotten to adjust for the bonus credit when you top up. I understand that bonus credit actually makes it less (slightly) for more. Hopefully bonus credit stays around permanently.

I'm not sure what the fuss is all about re the $10 TXT. $12 gives you 600 TXTs, but if you look really close it, even the smallest topup amount ($20) nets you $5 bonus topup, equating to a 20% discount on all published rate, so the $12 for 600 TXTs is really just $9.60! If that's not cheaper than $10 TXT, I don't know what is.

And if you do happen to top up $60, you've saving 25% on all published rate, so the 600 TXTs becomes just $9!

i dont think this has been answered yet...

if you are a telecom prepaid/postpaid customer you do not have to buy a SIM card when you upgrade your handeset to XT

@awesome777 your SIM card maybe not have been provisoned on the network yet, leave it till tomorrow morning, turn the phone off, take the SIM out, reinsert it and turn the phone. If it hasn't aquired the network by then then give Telecom a call. On the up side your old phone will continue to work untill the change over takes place.
