I had 2 Okta Touch's and 2 Apaches. My first taste of Android was on the Touch. Fond memories.

I still have an HTC Apache somewhere.

I think the roaming question related to 025 phones, and yes, you would be "roaming" if you travelled too far from your usual home base. I also remember the 025 network had amazing coverage. Today it's used by the paging network.

Is everyone so underwhelmed by the Spark launch that they're having to re-live the Glory Days?

I actually remember a bunch of the old phones circa 2K4, my brother co-designed and wrote a Crusty Daemons game for Telecom, but most were too slow to run flash at anything faster than 15fps. Worked great on my SE T610i though :p

NikT: Funny thing about the Okta Touch - work done at Massey to port Linux to that device contributed towards the creation of HaRET (Handheld Reverse Engineering Tool), which extended the lifespan of many Windows Mobile devices by allowing them to boot into Android. Even more significantly, that led to the enormous development space for the glorious HTC HD2, which boots nearly anything you throw at it - It's still my all-time favourite phone. If it wasn't for the Okta Touch and those folks at Massey, a huge international crew of homebrew software developers may never have gotten started. :)

I was a big fan of the Okta Touch's QWERTY-toting cousin, the HTC Titan, which I scored for ~$100 off of TradeMe back in the glory days of the TelstraClear CDMA MVNO plans:

Scroll wheel, soft-touch keyboard, extending stylus, and a glorious form factor, the Titan was a lovely thing. Snapping out the spring-loaded keyboard was enormously satisfying (Especially when it triggered Transformers sound effects). I'm the huge phone nerd I am today entirely thanks to being thrown in the deep end of Windows Mobile custom ROMs via the Titan and the Apache before it.

I used to charge $50.00 to unlock the GPS on the HTC Titan, and then install Garmin :-) Always wondered why Telecom locked the GPS on these phones. Good ol days of WM.

Holy crap, I remember those! My ex had two. First one with a red-text-black background screen, then an LCD model like the one above. I don't think text messaging was an option on those, was it? (I didn't even have a cellphone back then).

From memory the slim battery gave a massive 8 hours standby time!

Yeps I've been texting since day 1. With this model it could only receive texts. The message would just scroll across the screen. It just wasn't set up to be able to create a text.

I remember reading your posts on various Pocket PC forums back in the day, only so many people out there discussing Windows Mobile CDMA devices in NZ!  Much respect.

Never did manage to get EvDO working on my Titan, nor MMS, but it wasn't for lack of trying (Not least because the TCL CDMA MVNO plan had only ~500txts but 'unlimited MMS' due to an issue with the billing systems). Then again, I wasn't about to use too much data at $3.00/MB.

If I recall correctly, Telecom prepaid was still $10/MB right up until "XT" in 2009. The phone that I had at the time (Nokia 6275i) didn't have Wi-Fi so downloading apps wasn't cheap!

Yep! $3.00/MB seemed downright reasonable in comparison - and you couldn't connect smartphones to prepaid plans unless you sweet-talked someone from Telecom into bending the rules..

I had the 6275i briefly as well, was a horror of a device after coming from my Sony Ericsson V640i. SE sure made some good dumbphones. Nokia did too, of course, but the 6275i wasn't really one of those.
