I think the ad relates to a regular NZer, but all in all its pretty crap when trying to sell telco services. Its too long for starters.
Spark, what are you selling. Why should I spend my dollar with you? What can you offer me that will improve my life or business?
The advert has certainly got everyone on here thinking about and discussing what they thought it was or wasn't about. I'd hazard a guess that the advert has done exactly what Spark's marketing gurus intended it to do.
Why are people so desperate to link a product to the advert? In this case, it's the overall brand being promoted, not a specific product. It's about Spark helping people to connect (in whatever way that may be).
I can think of a couple of ads playing right now that have a tenuous link to the brand they promote:
1. BP's loose connection to Tom, the kid who drops rosebuds on Jenny from his grandad's glider.
2. Contemporary dancer/choreographer Parris Goebel and NZ Post.
The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

That is always the excuse made by creators of bad adverts...'Well it got people talking'...
But in this case I think more people didn't really notice it, and it didn't engage, as the tone of it was so much like those domestic violence and traffic safety adverts. If it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't have noticed it, and it wasn't an ad I would want to see again because it wasn't engaging . So IMO it is a fail.
That and we are a different breed on here where we are discussing it when most people when they see it would probably go errrm what was that.
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding : Ice cream man , Ice cream man
Ok am I missing something here? this is just about a short telco advertisement on TV right?

It's for a telco? How could you tell?

Although if they are asking what it was about, it may want them to find out more about it. If it is an ongoing story, it is not exactly a friendly Fernleaf butter advert.
1eStar: Nobody is sure what:
a) the ad is about
b) what Mike is arguing about
Either way it generates more traffic
Who's arguing?
Towards the end I noticed that the guy was missing an ear and wondered if maybe he is deaf and learning to dance with guidance from his daughter.
It's really hard to follow what is going on.

Those ads were awesome. Especially towards the end when the teenage girl hooked up with the older bloke and then had a bit bust up with the mother about it.
So the ad just came on. I asked my wife if she'd seen it before and she said no. So I rewound to the beginning, played it through, and hit pause about two seconds before the Spark logo appears, and said "What do you think it's for?"
She had no idea.
Then I let the last few seconds play and said "How do you think it relates to Spark products or services?"
She had no idea.
For some reason this damn ad is appearing everywhere, including on youtube as the main ad, and I can't get rid of it or disable it from reappearing. It must be in the google remarketing code, due to visiting the video before.
wazzageek: I thought it was pretty neat, Dad reconnecting with daughter. It was funny to see the "spot" dog on the couch.
Of course, it has us all associating the ad with spark and talking about it ...
Indeed. It actually had me smiling at the end. Lovely, sweet story. And one that many working Dads could relate to too. I know I get grumpy with my kids at times, and alway feel bad when I do.
And yeah, it did get us all talking. So I bet Spark consider it a success there too. Especially if it is the opening salvo in an overarching campaign. Kind of like the Anchor butter ones of the 90s.
I thought it was going to be an ad about parenting, workplace fatigue or driving tired, or falling asleep and burning the house down when I first saw it.
