Yeah, our speedtest servers aren't slow... This is a wget from a $50 odroid on my home network from one of the Spark speedtest servers... (obviously on Spark Fibre Max)

The ookla app is designed to give a reasonable idea of achievable peak performance but it does it without saturating the link for long, and it does it adaptively by adjusting the actual test depending on a number of factors it tries to determine at the beginning of the test. Although it's often fine, it frequently gives misleading results depending on browser, OS, network setup etc...

Even in the EU, 10Gbit servers are still not common.

Downside of when you get this fast is.. even 10GB test files, finish so fast..

Worth noting, this is a 10G link that the activity was not turned off on. When i built this machine before it was put into production and onsold it pegged out at 1G/s links in seconds.

Personally i'd pay for fibre max in a heartbeat - Two of them even! but that's just me and my network...

But then you are definitely not the average user :P

I had 200Mbps (before they started offering Max\Gbps) for a while but even when I decided to drop from that to 100 Mbps I realistically noticed almost zero difference. Only thing I really noticed was some Steam downloads took a bit longer. Not a big deal for me.

Your tenant is far more likely to have issues due to connecting via wifi than to notice a difference between 200 and 800 Mbps IMO...

Yes, but you also gotta remember that some people want the 500mbps uploads too.

For me, getting gigabit wasn't for the downloads. I for sure wasn't going to saturate 900mbps downloads constantly, but uploads are a different story. I need as much of that as possible.

Then again, I'm not an average user either

There are people in NZ with nothing at all.

Take a look at Ngapara for instance.

No adsl, no wifi broadband, nothing.

I am quite happy on 14 mbps adsl....I have been in a place where I was doing well to get 2.

There's a pretty big difference between 20 Mbps and 500 Mbps upload.

Most RSPs price 200/200 same as gigabit so the next tier down in terms of upload is effectively 20 Mbps.

Not really. Torrenting maybe on a well seeded torrent. You'll need to have many streams open (even if they were 4K streams) to "max out" a 200Mbit connection to the point everyone was getting buffering issues. Most gaming services also tend to cap out well below 1Gbit and to be honest people are not really going to care too much if a download is running at 20mb/sec.

The point is there is very few things that'll utilize a fast connection like this and nobody would really notice unless if they went off and did a Speedtest.

You could have around 15-20 simultanous HD streams going on a 200Mbps connection. That's well beyond what even a high end user would ever do.

As for torrenting for most many people their PC will become a bottleneck for torrenting once you start trying to sustain much over 200Mbps.

I, also, recently had a connection that I thought was all over the place. Use the Ookla APP, not anything that is browser based. Once I started testing with the app, I'm 940 mbps +/- 10 depending on time of day.
