Safesearch and Youtube Restricted mode are two entirely different things. Safesearch is enforced by sending google/bing requests to specific domain names (so intercepts DNS requests, note that other search providers do not do this an require ssl decrypt to enforce safesearch). Restict mode is a feature of youtube that is seperate to safesearch.

For example at home we enforce safesearch for everyone, and youtube restrict mode for the kids only.

Imo google shouldn't chunk this into one flag.

It's not Google - it's the way the underlying NetShield product does it. 

Someone earlier talked about filtering in schools... N4L is totally coincidentally busy rolling the same thing out to schools but using a different version of the product, and implementing it differently too. I did have to work our vendors though to ensure Youtube Moderate or Strict modes were functionally separated from SafeSearch.

You'd need to run your own local DNS and authoritatively host a few specific zones yourself as you need to CNAME request to forcesafesearch.google.com and strict.bing.com respectively.

You'll need to get a list of all the TDLs though - otherwise it's too easy to just use a different www.google.XXX domain

Well, it looks like someone at Spark finally sorted out my issue, and I've now got the Basic NetShield in place.  Found out as some YouTube channels I follow no longer have any content showing!

Comms have started going out today, so figured i'd let the techys here know too.

on the October 25th, a system change will be completed to split Youtube restricted mode and Google Safe Search.

This change is also included on our Basic Net Shield Product.

 

We’re changing the YouTube settings in Net Shield.
Based on this feedback we’re making an update to the YouTube ‘Restricted Mode’ on 25 October.
This means you’ll be able to watch things like 80s music videos, sports highlights, exercise channels
and any untagged categories, which might’ve previously triggered the Net Shield filters.

Manage your Net Shield settings through MySpark.
Remember, Net Shield only works when you have your filtering set to ‘ON’ in your MySpark
settings. So, if you’ve turned your filtering to ‘OFF’ to get around the YouTube Restricted
view, please remember to set this back to ‘ON’ after 25 October.

If you’d like to keep the Restricted Mode in place for YouTube, you can activate this for individual

Hi Everyone, 

Been a long while since this was updated but would be interested to get some advice. 

The setup I am using netshield with is the following 

* Spark Wireless Broadband 

Windows 10 laptop 

2 x Android phones 

2 x Alexa 

MorePork Security product 

Now it is working fine with everything except the Win10 Laptop (with latest updates) it just does not find the DNS that is being used with the connection, I had it set to find this on connection. 

Before giving up and going down the same messy road @hio77 helped me with a few years back I thought i would change the DNS on the windows10 connection and now have Google DNS in use (the 8.8.8.8) but ....

Using 8.8.8.8 does this mean that the laptop is not being covered by netshield, i am wanting to get my head around this before i suggest the product to a friend just to keep things running smoothly. 

Or if anyone had any idea why Win10 would grumble at Net Shield ? :)

using 8.8.8.8 does mean netshield wont do it's filtering yes.

Can you explain how netshield is setup on your service exactly? as ideally it should simply be your modem gets PPPoE, is given DNS when it connects, then all your devices use your routers dns server.

Im just testing it with the default Mature filter options, - as with the age of the child we hope to put this in place for it should be the best. 

Ill send you some more info in a private message if thats ok as think some of it might be best not in public oh and no changes have been done to the settings on the modem.
