When activating cell info display a 6 numbers are displayed on the standby screen (where normally the name of the cell would be displayed) e.g. 883349 884042. Is there a way of changing this to indicate the cell name or, a database of what these numbers correspond too?

Hi Are you saying that with an XT SIM you would get the name of the cell? I'm told that XT doesn't broadcast the cell name over the air interface, so if you say it does then I will do some testing. This should be common though between XT and Skinny as it is delivered by the network. Is there a specific reason that you want this displayed? cheers Paul.

Cheers for the reply. It is similar to what you get over the Voda 2G network however rather than dispalying cell name there are a series of 6 numbers (which i would imagine correspond to the cell site)
Attached is a picture. The numbers frequently change.

Hi yes the numbers do correspond to the cell site. We don't transmit the cell names though - just the numbers. cheers Paul

Thanks Paul. Dont spose there is a way of knowing what numbers these correspond to? E.g. 885059 is Ardmore ?

It's really common on many networks globally - I've come across a large number networks around the world in my travels that transmit this, even on GSM. Some in the old days also used channels other than 50 which required manually subscribing.

Because it's interesting and helps people to whinge and moan about coverage etc ;) And of course there would be a way for you to find out what these numbers correspond to Skinny - if you don't prsonally know someone at Telecom will.....

It's not the sort of things networks give out publically. Asking for it it a bit like calling up the Police and asking where all the Police cars are located.

Having said that there is nothing secretive about the codes as they can be viewed by any phone. It's simply the LAC + Cell ID + sector. If a site is dual or tri carrier you'll see the 1/2/3 4/5/6 and 7/8/9 numbering convention used.

I mapped all the Cell ID's around Wellington for 99% of both XT and Vodafone sites a few years ago when I was working on some coverage stuff, a process that only took me a weekend. It'll largely be out of date now because networks do change things, and there is no point in updating it because quite frankly it's completely meaningless data unless you have a specific need for it and more importantly actually understand what it means.

Using it to "whinge and moan about coverage" is fraught with issues unless you actually understand how a WCDMA network functions, and how cell adjacency is configured.

I remember about 10 years ago when I got my first GMS fone on Voda I always saw the cell site name. Seemed have vanished over the last few years.. It was very handy to know just where you where.

I thought this function was only used on 2nd generation GSM networks. But all networks transmit the country and operator code number allocated. I stand to be corrected if wrong.
