Having some trouble with my new Skinny ADSL2+ connection.

Just putting this out here if anyone has any good ideas or seen this kind of problem before.

I will write it in a time line as this will be quicker to read

Feb 1 - Skinny modem arrives - Test modem to see sync speed - about 17000Bb/s download - Then plug Slingshot modem back in

Feb4 - Slingshot disconnection date - Called Slingshot myself to disconnect

        - Skinny Connection date

Line Sync speed 17500Kb/s download

Feb 5-6 Internet still up using Slingshot modem (seems Chorus had not done anything) Line Sync speed 17500Kb/s download

Feb 7-8 - No Line Signal ( seems Chorus guys did something bad ..

Feb 9 - DSL line up Line Sync speed 13000Kb/s download  ( I was told that Chorus had connected me to faulty port ? and didnt check their work to see if the line came back up)

         - Had to call Skinny to finish provisioning my connection :(  They did then get it working over the phone..

         - Restarted modem a few times..  Sync Speeds all over the show .. 13000Kb/s  then 6500Kb/s then 10000Kb/s   :(

Feb 13 - Now - Chorus Techs have been to my home 3 more times - Mostly trying to blame my side for problems.. I have had 2 line tests done by Skinny and on my 3rd tonight (24-48hours they said)

I have asked Skinny for a report of what work has been done on my Line from Chorus because I keep telling them its a Port or DSLAM problem.  My connection now seems to be mostly Sync 7000Kb/s

Using the Huawei HF659 modem from Skinny and the NetCom NB604N from Slingshot

Only 1 Connected Phone jack in house connected Directly to outside line to Road side.

I am 1500m from the Kaitaia Exchange. I am told i am just outside VDSL coverage.

I have attached 1 screenshots of my connection before Switching to Skinny ( so before my DSLAM was switched) using the Netcom rounter

and another screen shot after the switch if you like to compare.. I new my SNR is very different :/

Both the Netcomm shots look like a very good sync rate for the line length. 29dB suggests a longish line length (well outside useful VDSL range), but good sync rates means not much background noise. The difference between the Slingshot and Skinny sync rates are due to the different noise margins used (6dB vs 12dB).

It may be the Huawei chipset isn't as happy on that length line, hence the lower sync rate it is negotiating.

Both lines are showing a higher number of ES for the uptime - what's the area like - any electric fences or other similar interference nearby?

Both modems will sync around the same now.
Jumping from 6mb/s to 14mb/s on different reboots. Within the same hour also. As one tech tried to blame it on busy line. Can be 3am and still same problem.

I also tried the hauwawi modem before the DSLAM change and i5 synced up with a good speed and was stable did 3 restarts. Didn't screen shot tho. Didn't foresee this kind of problems. Happening

As for the area. I'm in town no interference that I know. also it would have had to start between my discount and reconntion datas which seems unlikely

The errors visible may not impact the sync rate, but they can impact on throughput - they may well have always been there, but not causing you any issue.

Does the sync rate stay static with time? If it syncs at (say) 13k, will it negotiate downwards over time?

Appreciate your internal wiring is fairly simple, but if Chorus have checked to the demarc without finding anything several times, it would pay to double check and confirm there is no issues with it - line stubs, bad joints, corrosion etc.

Sync Rate will stay within 50kb/s  or less for as line as the lines up.

Just sort of goes down 5-10 then up and so on.

Then can re sync and can drop from say 13500kb/s(down) and re sync at 6500kb/s(down)

I have check my wiring a few times now very confident that its fine.

Chorus guy also re-cut and cleaned my wires at road side.

I hope tomorrow to goto my neighbors and see if i can get screen shows of their modems stats to compare.

Funny that the Chorus website says one of my neighbors the house right beside mine has VDSL. Must be a mistake.

Do you think it could be a faulty DSLAM Card?

You have moved off ULL gear to Chorus. Chorus use higher SNR for better stability but lower sync.

What would course my sync speeds to fluctuate like this? 14 to 6 then back to 10 and so on.

sounds like a bit of an inconsistant issue.

likely your neighbors line is in a different feeder or on another cabinet.

I believe in kaitaia there is only the one exchange building. I'm 1.5k from there. That's road distance not line of sight.

Do you think going back to slingshot would help. Would that get me put back on ULL gear?

The drop in sync rate from approx 17000 to approx 13000 is expected and normal. Slinghsot run a lower noise margin than Chorus (6dB vs 12dB) which you can see in the modem screenshots posted. The lower noise margin allows for a higher sync rate at the expense of some stability.

The fluctuating sync rate you are see currently though (13000 - 7000 approx) has nothing to do with whether you are on ULL or Chorus gear. Such a massive fluctuation is abnormal.

Keep an eye on the noise margin - if it starts dropping from 12dB to near 0dB, and then there is a resync to a lower sync rate, then there is likely some external interference creating a variable background noise. Is there any other pattern to the fluctuation - temperature / moisture / wind or other movement?

Were you getting that amount of sync rate fluctuation when the line test was done last?

EDIT: 29dB downstream attenuation would indicate a line at least a couple of km long - the cable route from you to the exchange doesn't always take the shortest route by road, and may detour up and down side streets.

I have been getting fluctuation the whole month. With and without line tests being run.

Thanks so much everyone :)   I didn't know about ULL in my area but make sense now.

I did a speed test at the house beside me today. They only get 11Mb/s running Spark.. So not that great.

Looks like I might be heading back to Slingshot :/ just for the speed increase...

I will give Skinny another few days to test the line and then I will prob have to give them 30 days notice to disconnect even tho this is my first month..

Will see how we go..

The problem with moving back to Slingshot is that you cannot guarantee it will resolve your problem. If the problem is a faulty port (a very reasonable possibility) then changing to a ULL provider will resolve the problem, but if the problem lies elsewhere, you are back to square one.

What did Skinny say about the widely fluctuating sync rate during the line test - I would have thought it would be fairly easy to resolve if that variation occurred during the test period.

Perhaps @SkinnyBB or @LivingSkinny may be able to assist.

They keep saying the line looks fine.

They also tell me to keep my modem turned on and no reboot it because the test will have to start again.

So they will run test and ill be connected at say 13Mb/s and they will say its fine.

The I will restart my modem next day and sync at 6Mb/s again.

Someone they run a test when im sync at 6Mb/s and they dont say much but send a Chorus tech out and he will do nothing.

Comes into home unplugs my modems DSL jack and plugs into his handle tester. and gets a sync at 11Mb/s and says that fine and drives away.

Restart modem and syncs at 13Mb/s.. come back 20mins later and reboot modem and sync at 6 or 8 Mb/s again.

Its been a fun time :/

these cases are difficult to follow through with..

Realistically this should be pushed to assure who will take a close look at things then give the techs the correct information to go and resolve the issue.

Otherwise yes they will turn up and say okay all good.
