I've had complaints from people on fibre overseas telling me they can't listen to a 256k audio stream from my 20/100 Fibre connection without buffering issues.



I'm guessing they are all wrong that it's my end because I can listen to my stream on a Spark 4G mobile fine here.



The only problem is, I haven't had a single comment on the stream from those offering to check it other than 'buffer city' internationally.



I can listen to overseas streams fine so I'm guessing it's nothing to do with latency.



Yet, they can listen to other streams fine at the same bitrate.



There's a real shadey area in between called the Internet. So this is a hard one to figure out other than put it down to fibre is nothing impressive to NZ on the global scene.

I've checked my logs too, and I've never had more than 3 stream attempted at a time. So there should be ample bandwidth at my end yes?

its fine for me from my Spark connection (Auckland), its also fine from my VPN with an end point in Australia, but buffers with the end point in the US

 

I suspect its due to TCP latency

Thanks for checking, much appreciated.

I thought about latency however I can pick up streams up to 320Kbps from the USA and the UK without much drama. So I'm a bit baffled on the upstream path.

The stream is just TCP not UDP so I'm not sure what's going on with buffering to he US.

I might try and see if I can increase buffers anywhere on the server side. Although that doesn't have much effect over client buffer settings if they aren't set to use it all. There's about 4-5 seconds buffer if I pull the server out from my mobile.

It's been a while, but if I recall correctly then TCP uses "acknowledgement" packets to confirm successful receipt. Greater distance increases the latency, which in turn delays the successive packets. If you can use UDP instead then that'll likely solve the buffering issue, with the tradeoff of the occasional bad packet.

I have run a flac stream out over my VDSL connection which was playable by 3 simultanious people overseas (UK and singapore) so I doubt that there is a problem with TCP since that was around 7-800 kbps

This would be my pick too.

 

 

 

See if you can't play with your TCP stack a little to increase window size.

I'm in the US on a 50/50 Mbps AT&T Fiber connection and I tried streaming your link but it said it couldn't be found.  Did you shut it down or is it only streaming during certain times?  Thought I could try and assist you since I'm remote from one of the countries you are having issues with the streaming quality.

 

On another note, you may want to make your setup more secure because when I go to http://shoutcast.radioinvercargill.nz it gives me a directory listing and one of the links takes me to your CV which includes your first and last name, address, phone number, email address, etc.  Not sure I would want all of that information being easily accessible for anyone to view if it were me.
