In Aussie right now and have been buying $20 roaming packs for the last 3 weeks with no issues. Have got low data mode switched on and all unnecessary data using apps disabled. Bought my 3rd roaming pack yesterday arvo and woke to find all data gone next morning. Log says data was all used at 2230 last night in one go. I was asleep at the time and phone was on charge. Remember I’ve already been roaming for 3 weeks and no issues. So I eventually get through to skinny help phone and told too bad nothing they can do but buy another pack. Well that’s just BS!! I know it wasn’t my fault, as I said all settings on my end were on low data use.
Maybe someone on here is a skinny rep and can help me understand skinny’s lack of customer support.

You are charged for data used you are using a Smart phone so something must of updated or something else, Skinny is charged for the data usage coming from the roaming carrier

If anything turn data off when not required

You should of ported to 2degrees free roaming for all customers including prepaid (limited time) think end of July

umm it's not skinny's fault.

say you have a bank account of 5000 bucks and you walk into the candy store and say i'm not buying no candy. then your wife takes your 5000 bucks and buys a handbag. you don't go to the bank and try to get your money back.

i'm not saying it doesn't suck but it's not skinny's fault.

Can your phone support dual-sim? If so maybe pick up one from a local Telco with a decent data allowance

As someone who has roamed quite a few times before over the years and was a reasonably heavy user (I used it for Youtube and VPN'ing):

* Low data is a good start but consider turning off data globally when you aren't using it.

* If you can't do that (eg. disrupting Imessage/whatsapp...) Disable mobile data access for any/all non-essential apps. eg. Limit to your messaging apps and your browser.

* When you finish using potentially data heavy app eg. youtube, consider force closing it.

* Turn off any download over mobile options for Apple Music, Spotify etc. This can be a killer if you regularly have playlists rollover.

Thankfully these days, there are more tools to prevent shock bills for data roaming and the price per MB has gone down significantly... but with 3G or 4G, it is easy to blow several GB without trying too hard.

If this sounds like too much trouble, the next best thing is to consider switching to an operator that gives you a fixed price for daily roaming (eg. MB usage will come off your domestic allowance).

check your data usage logs on the phone, should be able to pinpoint the app that used the data

On the iPhone - mobile data preferences: Settings -> Mobile

Data Roaming switch - phone wide on/off

Apple Music - download songs over mobile (very important if using regularly updated playlists): Settings -> Music
At the top there is also a switch to enable/disable mobile access for Music.

iCloud photo/media backup: Settings -> Photos

There are similar settings for Google drive and Onedrive.

Also if you use any Wifi tethering with PC's, make sure that the hotspot is set to metered to avoid Windows update surprises.

You can see the data usage in iOS but annoyingly, the period is not a month or anything logical… it’s since it was last reset (or the SIM changed I think).

For being overseas for that long, best answer is nearly always a local SIM either in a dual SIM phone or by moving your NZ SIM to a second (old) phone to answer calls.

Or a 3UK SIM with free global roaming
