i have changed to the telecom Big time unlimited broadband plan to test it
telecom clearly state that it is good for online gaming but if that is the case why is it that most gamers here play on austrailian servers
yet i dont call i constant 300 ping on call of duty 4 good for gaming this is on a server i would normally have 60 ms ping
i hope they fix this as they clearly say that gaming should not be affected from there traffic management

Are you sure your router doesn't have a problem, nothing has changed in your cabinet/exchange, your house wiring is completely checked and working properly, all required filters are correctly installed?

Have you tried using the Internet with no other device (phone, fax, Sky) connected to your home wiring and measured performance?

Not defending Telecom exactly, but most of the problems with speed these days are actually inside the house.

nothing has changed apart from changing plans
and i must say i was sort of wrong it turns out i will get some times where ping goes just above normal witch now i one of them
but most of the time i have a constant 300 ping i will provide a traceroute as soon as it goes back up
and if you look at
http://www.gpforums.co.nz/showthread.php?s=0764b38da814b003fc60e42619976891&threadid=362778&perpage=25&pagenumber=1
you wil see im not the only one with this problem
to me it looks like telecom just lieing to make sales again nothing new there
and i havnt called them yet as i know that i will most likely get someone who speaks very little english and doesnt know a dam thing about broadband

Ok. But just for testing, try using the Internet with no phone, fax or Sky plugged to the wall, and see how it goes.

jdgamez: and i havnt called them yet as i know that i will most likely get someone who speaks very little english and doesnt know a dam thing about broadband

Why not call? You can't be sure about something if you don't try. Saying "i will most likely get someone who speaks very little english" sounds like you want it to be bad.

if it doesnt get any better i will call them but for now i dont see the point as i know there are lots of people with this problem on the big time plan and i know a fare few of them have called so i dont see the point in me calling to get the we are working on it answer or it must be on your end answer
and i have done tests without anything else conected to the line didnt help at all speeds are also very slow but i dont care about that i knew that one when i was signing up for the plan but i was told pings would not be affected but we will wait and see

That's a bit rich considering that you're missing punctuation in your post making it very difficult to read.

Yes there is currently a problem on Big Time with peak time latency hitting 300ms to the US and AU.

Only noticed it in the last week or so, it was fine before there and it only seems to be happening in the peak time after work from what I've seen.

There are a whole bunch of threads about it on the game planet (mighty ape) forums

Bad Ping Telecom
Big Time Guild Wars Lag
Big Time Ping Today

Basically I don't believe they are lying but the traffic management setup still needs tweaking and refining.

What you can do is report the problem by filling out the contact form below, attach some tracert and ping screen shots and tell them what time of day it's happening.

I've found that the speaking English isn't a problem with overseas call centers. I'd find it would be equally troublesome getting someone unhelpful within New Zealand.

If there is one thing to watch out for it's place names. I'm glad my parcel from Dell arrived to

I had them spell it back to me aswell :(

My home plan is Big time and I agree that this plan is not good for gamers, and at peak time I get my son rebooting the router all the time, and before I get filters blabla speech, this has only happened after moving to big time. And as we know bittorent is not the issue at peak time, it must come down to too much other shaping and not enough international capacity, if Telecom was selling milk it would be watered down, and if Telecom was selling petrol it would be 50 octane and my car would be running like a sick dog.

I guess its either some sites or some sites are ok - I've found the bigpond BF2 servers are quite good on bigtime, fairly good, when there are quality players on the server.

Maybe he's expecting a bad experience?  I knew after requesting broadband with Orcon (pre LLU days) that work had been done when my phone didn't work.  Maybe the technician as they were leaving accidentally tripped over the lead, and pulled it out of the socket?  That's my only conclusion.  So I ring up Telecom to ask why my phone doesn't work, and the person on the other end kindly says that I need to ring up Orcon now because they are in control of my line now.  I ring back and get someone who actually understands basic concepts.

A few months ago I phone Telecom to cancel Call Minder.  I speak to a nice Philippine man who slowly takes me through all the necessary steps in order to cancel.  "May I ask why you are cancelling this service?" (Because I just bought an answering machine).  etc. etc.  7 minutes.

Thankfully some intelligent person in Telecom realised that it would be better to keep NZ'ers doing the help desk for broadband.  But bad news travels fast, and OP thinks calling Telecom will be a useless experience.

Also, I like the Telecom helpdesk in the Philipines! I've always found them very helpful. Not all overseas helpdesks are bad

This ping problem is only occurring in peak time after work eg: from 6pm until about midnight it's fine the rest of the time.

It's not just his end, plenty of gamers are complaining about it (see my links earlier).

Tthe rules they have in place currently are causing over 100% increase in latency during peak time (6pm-12) to AU and US servers, they probably need more hardware or to tweak the rules.
