just a small Question How does vodafone/telecom no when it's you calling them. eg when you check your account balance
it give's yours and no one else's how does it work. does it work by caller id or something else?

give if you press 0197 before there number they still not it's you.

i feel kind of dumb asking this Question for some reson but i think it's got to be done or i wil never no the answer

0197 probably sends a command to the network to hide your CID from the called party but only if the called party is off the Telecom internal network.

Eg> if called number =(any area code), block CID
if called number =(any TNZ internal number, esp 111 or 123 or *333 or 0800,000,000 etc), dont block CID

At the simplest level the signalling protocol required to setup a call, which contains amongst other things the number you are wanting to call (aka B-party), also contains two other fields. These are CLID and CLIP, CLID is your number and stands for "Calling Line IDentification". CLIP is "Calling LIne Presentation". This is set by the network, if you have what people know as "Caller ID" enabled. An example of this is while most mobile phones have this (CLIP) enabled so you can see who is calling, yet most landlines do not have this enabled as this is an add-on service.

So, CLIP is a service that allows you to see other peoples phone numbers and CLID is the protocol or method used.

You can prevent someone from seeing your number when you call them by overriding CLIP using what ever the number with hold feature is available for the network you are connected to. Some mobilephones allow you to do this as a setting on the phone while but some networks use what is called a "feature activation code" to enable/disable you number from being presented to callers.

Just remember that no matter what you see in movies, the telco (mobile or fixed) knows exactly who calls who (or is that whom)for every call. It is their billing systems that make the decision whether the call made is "free" or not.
