Telecom just sent out this release:

TELECOM GIVES PREPAID USERS POWER TO CUSTOMISE MOBILE PLANS

Telecom today launched its new Prepaid Value Packs designed to let prepaid customers build their own plans, based around how they want to use their mobile.

The Value Packs offer customers a combination of bundled text, minutes and/or data for just $20, over and above their prepaid plan.

Chief Marketing Officer, Kieren Cooney says the new Value Packs enable prepaid customers to customise their plans to suit their needs.

“We all know customers all use their phones differently – and have preferred methods of connecting friends and family. While some people prefer to talk, others would rather text or send a tweet.

“These value packs are about giving our customers the power to customise their plans by choosing to ramp up their minutes, texts or data at a great value price point.

“For example, our TalkTextData pack which includes 20 any-net minutes, 1000 any-net texts and 200MB of data means customers have the choice to communicate using the channel that suits them best without needing to worry about the cost.

“While the Talk pack is for those customers that just love using their mobile to make calls, giving them 40 any-net minutes to use over 90 days” says Cooney.

Customers have a choice of three Value Packs.

Customers can find more information about the new Prepaid Value Packs on their device through T-World or Your Telecom, or online at www.telecom.co.nz/prepaidvalue

The Talk Text Data plan is a great deal.

Less minutes and text than 2 degrees $19 combo pack but with 4 times the data it makes it far better value, well for me anyway who never uses that many texts/minutes in a month but find i always go close to the 50mb limit.

If only i could just swap SIMs :(

Hmmm, good that there is some actual competition starting to occur in the prepaid space following the good efforts by 2degrees.

That $20 talk/text/data plan looks like a fair deal to me.

About time we had some better competition, still not enough minutes for my $ but it's great to see!

I was having a look at The FAQ's for these packs and it raises a few questions, If I read it correctly there is also a change in the way Data Packs are charged. Currently Data packs are charged on a usage basis upto a certain level and then remaining data is free. The way I read the FAQ's is that if you have an existing Data pack and you do nothing then it stays as is. However if you add a data Pack in the future you will be charged the full cost  up front as the other operators do. This is where I am not clear but it appear to me if you have an existing Data pack and add one of the new value packs then both packs will be charged under the new regime. Is somebody able to clarify?

Having said that I do think that the introduction of these value packs is good and will be looking to take advantage of them.

Thanks

I saw that too, it follows VF and 2D where packs are fully charged up front instead of gradually working your way upto it

Before this was what made mobile broadband on telecom a winner for the occasional user. Have they killed this?

Will definitely be switching to the $20 talk/text/data on my phone next month, excellent value! Currently pay $18 for 300 txt and 120mb data, I think I can handle $2 more :)

What is happening with the My Favourites? The other half has this on her phone so can call me any time, but it seems to be missing from the new extras.. Its still listed on http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/yourmobile/plansandpricing#prepaid but when I log in to https://pwm.telecom.co.nz/mobileonliness/plan-and-extra/ it doesn't let me buy My Favourites.. Certainly hope they haven't dropped this!

There is a FAQ at http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3079

Can I have a mix of old and new Extras on my Prepaid phone?

No. The old Extras, which where not charged on a subscription basis, are no longer available to purchase.

So my guess is it will delete the old extras if you buy a new one?

According to the FAQ there is no change to the way My Favourites is managed. This only affects Text and Data Extras

So if you are currently on the $28 smartphone extra plan which is $1/MB for first 14MB and then the rest of 466MB is free (have the double data promo on my account for 12 months), will the system now charge me $14 every month at start of the month providing I have that much balance or it will still stay the same and charge me first for 14MB use providing I use 14MB in that month?

@ Bold - yes it will delete the old ones if you chose to move to the new subscription based plans. And note if you do move to the new ones you cant go back to the olds ones.

@billgates - if you do not change anything on your current prepaid setup it will stay the same. It would only change if you chose to move to the new subscrition based plans, as per the Q & A link...

http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3079

If you already have an XT Prepaid connection nothing changes until you decide to change or buy a new Extra. If you don't make any changes you stay on your old Extra, and that is absolutely fine.

I guess it will be wait and see as this could effect my wife.  She uses a T-Stick  at work to collect her emails and it takes about  3  months for her to use this up $20 worth of data.  If at the end of the next month i was charged  say $30 for 500Meg and every month after  it would be a complete waste of  time using Telecom  so I may as well use a 2D SIM and "buy50meg"

you can 'buy 50MB' on XT as well. $6 - same price as 2D

I imagine you would have to change plans i.e. remove the 500MB plan and switch to the 50MB plan.

ETA: that is, of course, of the mobile broadband plans are actually changing. Seems from the above that they aren't.

You are not limited to the pack, and then the extras. You can mix and match these, add more extras, etc. This you may have a Value Pack, you may add Extras. You may need more voice, so add another Value Pack. These will get used up in the order of purchase. And it is easier to manage what is left, either online, or on your phone.
