Asking the question here since i don't want to take the thread off topic and this seems like the right place to ask

freitasm: Notice: if people keep posting imgur images I will start banning accounts for breach of Wheaton's Law.

What's wrong with posting imgur images? Googling tells me wheatons law is essentially "dont be a dick". I don't understand how this is being a dick.

Personally I use imgur because its convenient. I can paste from my clipboard, i can give it a remote image url to upload instead of hotlinking an image, i can drag and drop into the browser window, and i can select from the desktop. A number of external services also support it like phone apps for example.
I can one click copy a thumbnail with bbcode to link to a full size image too, which is useful for showing a small image but giving people the option to view the full thing.

I had a quick look at the image uploader on here, and it says:
You have 366 kilobyte(s) uploaded to your image gallery, out of 9,766 kilobytes available.

While i don't expect every forum to be a bulk image host for obvious reasons, 10MB is barely anything when it comes to space for images (its the sort of space you had on hotmail 10+ years ago). While I could compress images to save space for everything i upload, chances are i'd have delete them to save space.
While sites like imgur reserve the right to remove inactive images, its certainly more room than 10MB.

So back to the question - What thats the problem with using a more convenient uploader with more features, and how is using it being a dick?

edit: I just saw this reply. I had this typed out sitting in a tab while geekzone was down, and hit post when i saw it was back up. Didn't see the reply until just now.
freitasm: People can just do one second more work and make things better for everyone else. If the images on other hosting sites were cropped I wouldn't have a problem with them.

So its simply oversized images then? If people shrunk them would it be okay?

Meta example below. Large thumbnail linked bbcode used. Ignore the image, just screenshotted a random page on their site for a large image.

I don't have a problem with hosting images on a third party in principle. I have a problem with people who don't consider others when posting an image.

Your post above is a good example. You posted a wide image which means when it's inserted it's reduced to fit a limited amount of screen, making things hard to read. If you had spent a few seconds more you could have cropped the image and got this:

A lot easier to read, and without all the crap around it.

THIS IS WHAT IS ANNOYING. People who take a screenshot of a 1366 wide screen and post that without cropping, making things almost impossible to read.

You might have noticed I've add imgur to our cache, which means images are actually served from our servers now - speed is not a problem anymore.

This makes more sense now, its a usability thing rather than anything to do with a specific image host. Much clearer now!

Sorry to but into your conversation on this but it may be what I am looking for
correct me if I am wrong
at present if I want to insert an image that shows in a forum post i have to first upload image to my section of images then copy the code , remove the end bits of code then insert remains as http into the insert image button on the forum post thingy.

Is that right?

I will learn how to implement the Imgur thing if that is easier than the above mentioned if so can we use that in the forums?

You only need to copy the code. No need to change anything.

Can you make it not need me to resize/recompress images before uploading? Thats the biggest hassle here is I take a photo on my phone, and its to big to upload. I screenshot the phone, and again, too big to upload often.

So you upload to anywhere else and post a giant image?

I can allow larger image sizes of course. Still won't solve the problem of people post giant images where everything is hard to read instead of cropping to the important parts.

Can the upload function have some magic added that automatically resizes to an appropriate dimension? That would save the user having to manually resize.

It already resizes keeping two images: original and resized.

People just have to realise that resizing means some things will get smaller and harder to read. Crop the image to what is essential and things get easier.

Sure we can resize a 1366 wide entire desktop screenshot down to 560. You can imagine nothing much can be seen though. All I ask is people be considerate and crop to what is important.

How about file size resize? Cropping is easy and sensible but if it isn't under the 200kB it rejects.

While we're on the topic of screenshots; Unless you really want people to see your whole desktop, ALT+Print Screen is way, way better than Print Screen alone.

It's 500KB now, which covers a lot of images - only if you take a full desktop screenshot you need more than this. Sure I can put it up to 5MB per image, which would mean people using gigantic desktop screenshots showing everything except the really tiny message they want to show.

It's a trade off. People can insert images but have to be sensible.

I'm more worried about photos. Resizing on a phone is a pain in the ass.
