Asking the question here since i don't want to take the thread off topic and this seems like the right place to ask
freitasm: Notice: if people keep posting imgur images I will start banning accounts for breach of Wheaton's Law.
What's wrong with posting imgur images? Googling tells me wheatons law is essentially "dont be a dick". I don't understand how this is being a dick.
Personally I use imgur because its convenient. I can paste from my clipboard, i can give it a remote image url to upload instead of hotlinking an image, i can drag and drop into the browser window, and i can select from the desktop. A number of external services also support it like phone apps for example.
I can one click copy a thumbnail with bbcode to link to a full size image too, which is useful for showing a small image but giving people the option to view the full thing.
I had a quick look at the image uploader on here, and it says:
You have 366 kilobyte(s) uploaded to your image gallery, out of 9,766 kilobytes available.
While i don't expect every forum to be a bulk image host for obvious reasons, 10MB is barely anything when it comes to space for images (its the sort of space you had on hotmail 10+ years ago). While I could compress images to save space for everything i upload, chances are i'd have delete them to save space.
While sites like imgur reserve the right to remove inactive images, its certainly more room than 10MB.
So back to the question - What thats the problem with using a more convenient uploader with more features, and how is using it being a dick?
edit: I just saw this reply. I had this typed out sitting in a tab while geekzone was down, and hit post when i saw it was back up. Didn't see the reply until just now.
freitasm: People can just do one second more work and make things better for everyone else. If the images on other hosting sites were cropped I wouldn't have a problem with them.
So its simply oversized images then? If people shrunk them would it be okay?
Meta example below. Large thumbnail linked bbcode used. Ignore the image, just screenshotted a random page on their site for a large image.
