So don't keep us in suspense JohnR and others, is this problem fixed?

From reading this thread, it looks like another Geekzone success story - and a good reason why big companies should let their staff participate in these places.

Any technical tidbits?

Since JohnR hasn't responded I have decided that I will take an irresponsible approach and put forward a theory based on pure wild speculation with no factual basis in the hope of provoking a response (shoot down).

This theory is that Vodafone are rolling out a second UMTS carrier in order to increase the bandwidth that they have available for their customers and to facilitate their new 28 Mbps network and that handovers between the two UMTS carriers weren't working correctly.

A second UMTS carrier is required to support hspa+ at 28Mbps, if you look at the HSPA standards you either go to 21Mbps on a single carrier like XT or you go for 2x14.4Mbps (28Mbps) using dual carriers. The benifit dual carriers has is that you can maintain a better signal to noise ratio on each carrier and therefore you should get better speeds especailly as you travel away from the base station.

I would be very suprised if this caused the issues people are seeing as i would assume that the changes to get 28Mbps will have limited deployment, e.g. Auvkland CBD and Airport, Wellington CBD and maybe Christchurch CBD.

Also when carriers say that they support 21Mbps or 28Mbps it is on a per nodeb basis and therefore to get the speeds you would like you would have to have no one else at all on 3G in the same cell.

overall the upgrades are great for customers so thats a great thing! just take the speed expectations with a cup of salt.

Any posts are personal comments and not that of my employer

I have been stuck on mobile BB for everyday use for a week, and had the same stalling problems as the OP with Vodafone. I switched to 2Degrees, using the same old-timey Vodem that I had previously cursed as unreliable. Result: no stalling, 100% reliable data sessions. This is in 2D's broadband zone so it's a lot cheaper too.

I have just returned from a weekend trip to Palmerston North, and the data stalling on the Vodafone data connection on my iPad up there was chronic. Strangely though I had no problems with my iPhone 3GS which is on 2degrees but would have been roaming on Vodafone's network at the time.

2 days without data stalling on my MiFi! Wow! Has Vodafone fixed the problem here in Rangiora yet?

XT sims turned up for both my 4.0 and my wifes 3gs on friday. By close of play tomorrow we will be hopefully back in full business..

Have had way less stalls of late, down to maybe one every two days as opposed to 5 a day. Maybe VFNZ have found the issues in Christchurch / Kaiapoi / Rangiora,... but for me, its time for a change.

I've been getting a lot of timeouts in Central Wellington. I got seriously f*ked off the other day when I was supposed to meet my wife and she couldn't text me due to "No Service" at ground level on Victoria St. Other times, texts get to about 90% progress and then fail.

I think if I weren't on a work phone (they pay the bills), I'd be on XT or 2Degrees.

At least now there's acknowledgement of the issue: http://forum.vodafone.co.nz/topic/6459-intermittent-issues-with-3g-data-and-voice/

Had a shocker of a day yesterday with vodafone... driving all around Auckland and up to Warkworth.... went for minutes without service in some areas where I know there is normally service. Many many data stalls and calls going straight through to voicemail.

XT is looking far more inviting as we have our business phones with voda and it is causing us all kinds of headaches

Goes to show how 'on to it' Vodafone are, has only taken them a month to finally acknowledge issues!

I have had the problems for over a year, text not sending, calls going to voice mail, calls not going out, text delays etc, was thinking it was my phone, got a new one, still same problem, then starting asking around and found that a lot of people had the problem in the office on vodafone, this is now why most of the office is on XT.
Did call once or twice about it and was told to "restart phone" told them but how do you know when to restart your phone if your not using it and people are trying to text and call and they are going to voice mail and we don't get the voice mail text.
Just learnt to live with it, :(

I would be happy if they could fix it but don't think they will, they will just say "restart the phone" and put the support ticket to fixed.

Yes it does. Ending the PDP context actually solves the issue, but on many devices such as iPhones you have no way of manually doing this.

If it doesn't fix it for you then you've got an entirely different issue.

I have had the opposite problem, if you can call it that. I run a vodafone and a telecom XT phone and my incomming calls to my landline divert to both lines. Some XT users including myself have only been able to receive about 30% of calls on the Telecom XT network. This has been ongoing for many weeks now and may still be an issue as the engineers have not identified the fault. They just keep trying different things without identifying the issue.
The calls just hang with either no sound or a non normal tone, but either do not connect or connect and then immediately disconnect.
The calls are coming into the Vodafone phone every time.

Well the problem is official now... It hit Computer World

"Vodafone says its technology team is working round the clock to fix an issue with its 3G network that was first raised by a Geekzone blogger last month."
