luketarver: I'd be very surprised, we only started experiencing this when fibre went in. Also if it were local congestion I don't understand why some sites are worse than others. I might have to bite the bullet and see if I can get a technician in from Vodafone

Thanks for your help

Best to give them a call. They will walk you through the troubleshooting as i advised. If that doesnt work they will log a ticket and get it looked further into. Not an issue requiring a physical tech visit.

Just out of curiosity, do you have an office server set up as a proxy or are your users accessing the internet directly?

Nah no proxy, all users are going directly through the router.

I'm really hoping it's not a more systemic issue with Telstra, I can imagine that Vodafone aren't really putting major emphasis on those legacy fibre services with the impending UFB rollout. We might have to suffer through until we can switch to that system.

Vodafone has does quite a bit of work on the old TCL fibre network and the HFC network since taking ownership, some serious $$$ is getting spent

Thankfully google/google apps doesn't seem to be seriously affected or we'd really be in trouble. Gmail can still be a bit slow to open at times but once it's up it seems fine.

Firefox, and likely the other browsers too, have good tools for looking at network traffic, breaking each request down by DNS resolution/Connecting/Sending/Waiting/Transferring. Should help you figure out if it is DNS, international traffic only, some CDNs etc.

Not saying there is an internal issue, but it is always best to rule out anything in the LAN.

Do you have any outbound traffic logging enabled? I know i had an issue at a site where their ADSL connection was slow for some sites some of the time but okish for other times. Turns out there was a lot of traffic for bitTorrent applications running from one computer. removed the PC and all was fine.

Having your firewall log the outbound traffic types is such a help when narrowing down the issues.

Thanks I'll have a poke around and see what our router is capable of. Just a quick look in the event log brings up some interesting warnings:

Error  Jan 8 15:28:32 FIREWALL icmp check (1 of 7): Protocol: ICMP Src ip: 69.197.58.227 Dst ip: 203.167.189.62 Type: Destination Unreachable Code: Port Unreacheable

Failing that I might see if the Firefox tools shed any light. Most of this stuff is well over my head though so I'll probably need to get in touch with Vodafone. I was mainly wondering if anyone had been through the same thing with Telstra fibre before I went down that path.

Cheer for all your help guys

Haha I just noticed that the router has "DEMO PREMIUM" watermarked right across the background of all the control panel webpages. Whaaat is going on, Vodafone? Premium indeed.

Hi,

Can you please try turn off the firewall temporarily and see if that works. I will see if that is the right firmware build.
**EDIT, Can you please call the helpdesk and get that looked into. Spoke with a guy here from the TCL side and he said that inst right.

Hmm no, at first I thought perhaps that did help but it's still happening. As I mentioned it's hard to pin down because it's intermittent. The most reliable 'broken' experience is instagram, where several (but not all) images refuse to load. The second I turn off WIFI on my phone and revert to 4G it starts working normally again.

Here are speed test results btw, just to show that the speeds are legit when it does connect.

This is with Rdio going in the background and probably a few users here on their email etc.

I'm sure once we get past this interminable wait for sites to start loading the service will be great!

No doubt. Make sure you call that helpdesk ASAP though to get the firmware looked at.

Will do in the morning cheers. Not overly optimistic that firmware can solve a problem which seems to be with international traffic only, but it would be good to know that we're up to date. The first router we were supplied didn't work at all and the Downer guy had to go and get another.
