Which is interesting because there was A LOT of buzz last night about the service being down. No word about that at all today from the Vodafone account. As if it didn't happen and no one complained.

It ain't just Vodafone's cable service - I can't get some websites to load via their dial-up service either, and it's been going on for many months (and it's not my ancient computer because the same happens on the newer laptop). Sometimes trying at a different time of day helps, but not often. Sometimes it can also help to press the browser's Stop / Refresh buttons a few times. Vodafone's hopeles system simply seems to forget you're even there waiting. :-(

I'm assuming you are referring to the dial-up issue. Do you happen to have anything you can comment on re the cable incident(s)? :)

The irony is not lost on me......

"Vodafone says the Government should scrap the rollout of fibre-based ultrafast broadband in much of Wellington and Christchurch "to make ends meet". Russell Stanners, chief executive of the Auckland- based subsidiary, said people could instead use Vodafone's cable broadband service which was available to 85 per cent of Wellington homes and almost two-thirds of homes in Christchurch. Cable could offer download speeds on a par with fibre for at least the next five years"

I'm finding my cable in ChCh to be a bit iffy sometimes lately - refreshing pages 2 or 3 times to get in. Likewise for my Clear email. Only in the last couple of weeks or so.

KiwiNZ: " Vodafone says ... Cable could offer download speeds on a par with fibre for at least the next five years"

Then show us this on par product already, most existing cable users would be gagging to see it. There are clearly other problems going on besides purely download speeds however, routing and proxy issues are two.

I have in the past and I got the same eventual timing out as the web browser, I long since given up bothering to even try ... and it's definitely not my computer since the same websites will sometimes work and sometimes not, and stopping / refreshing can sometimes "fix" it, logging off and back on to the dial-up connection can sometimes fix" it, etc.

Laughable, really. Coverage is small compated to WLG and CHC total area and I am not sure they can even resell that at the present without knowing the exact footprint they cover:

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc.) is strongly opposed to Vodafone’s suggestion, made public this morning, to scrap construction of the Ultra-fast Broadband network in Wellington and Christchurch.

Responding to the idea that the old HFC network be used in lieu of new UFB fibre in Wellington and Christchurch, InternetNZ’s CEO, Jordan Carter, says that it’s a retrograde move that makes little sense for anyone other than Vodafone.

“UFB needs to be rolled out to as much of New Zealand as possible. This suggestion by Vodafone begs the question, why would Kiwis choose to make use of a second-class network when we are already on our way to having a first–class network?”

“From the beginning, we’ve been a huge supporter of the UFB. InternetNZ welcomed Prime Minster John Key’s commitment to the plan in April 2008, and even commissioned research on the cost of a fibre build that was released later that year. Our long-term commitment to a fibre future is well established.

InternetNZ expects the Government to stand strong on its position, which has been that the UFB rollout will continue around the country.

“Minister Adams has been spot on with her comments that regardless of Chorus’ financials the UFB build must go on. We back her and the Government to make good on their election pledge of a world-class network for New Zealand,” said Mr Carter.

“It makes good economic sense for Vodafone to seek to make best use of the HFC network it bought when it took over TelstraClear, but replacing the UFB isn’t the way to go.

“While we support Vodafone and others doing some lateral thinking about how to speed up and improve the UFB rollout, this particular suggestion just doesn’t pass muster. The HFC network can deliver decent speeds, but it’s not future proof – the UFB is, and New Zealand needs to stick with it,” Jordan Carter says.

Vodafone should work to get HFC working well first.

Thought i'd add this smokeping to google.com into the mix from Mar 4, however lastnight at 930 i didn't see any losses. When I get packet loss above 10% I go read a book and wait until the monitoring tells me we've recovered.

Well if they were meant to help they have not, virtually unusable at the moment restarted modems router etc as I thought it might have been a total outage, it was that bad, decided to give the vpn a crack, it worked and now everythings working fine via the VPN, if I didn't have the vpn solution we would be dead in the water. In CHCH by the way, and in an unflooded area. It just feels like history repeats itself and we get a geekzone thread about every 1-2 months about this issue, about time they rebooted the transparent proxy/cache farm again, or  thats what it seems like.

Guess should ask the question about whether you are using Vodafone's DNS servers or another one ?
