Scotty1986: Hi All

I recently switched from Telecom VDSL to Vodafone VDSL and was told a tech would come around and inspect my set up, he called me on the day and said he would be 30mins but he never showed up. My VDSL came online so I just let it go. Over a month later I am getting speeds of 35 ping and 25 down 9 up. I was getting better speeds and around half the ping with Telecom.

Now although I know the basics about VDSL (DLM, Profiles etc) I do not know enough to tell if my set up is optimized and if I could be getting better speeds. I'm using the Vodafone supplied HG659 which does not tell me what DLM profile I am on or my line Attenuation. I would love to know this information.

When the Telecom tech came around the first time he was gone with 20mins, he put a new plug into the wall, tested and left. Now that my new Vodafone connection has been up for over a month I would have thought that maybe my speeds would have improved a little. But I have not seen a change. Is there a chance that DLM is not working for me, or there is a issue with my wiring? Or do I need to continue to wait? I was tempted to call Vodafone and ask to reset my DLM and start from fresh.

I am a pretty keen gamer so ping is important to me and I do notice even the slightest of changes. My devices are all wired.

So, should I wait, reset DLM, or get the tech to actually come around like he was meant to (I informed Vodafone and the Tech that I had VDSL previously but they said the tech would still come around anyway).

DLM aside, Vodafone have paid Chorus $5 x 30= $150 +GST for a connection + wiring order (which means indirectly you are paying that too) and if the tech never turned up then this hasn't been done.
I would request a technician come round to check your wiring, even though it is probably fine (although 20mins does sound pretty quick for the original master filter install though, so it probably is worth a check)

If they don't send one, I would request a credit of $150+GST because you aren't getting a service you have paid for.

Thanks for the advice Mantis. I think I do want the tech to visit just so I know my set up is optimal.

I have not used my connection in over a week (apart from the wife doing her usual Celebrity stalking) as I work at sea, does usage effect a line? I'm away every second week for at least 7 days. Just got home today. Its seems a little sad that the first thing I do is run a speed test. Maybe I need to join a group? Hello, my Name is Scott and I'm a Net-holic.

Hi guys, a quick update for you all. 8 days ago I got a txt message saying Vodafone were doing work in my area. When I arrived home from sea the other day I ran a speed test and to my surprise my ping has dropped to 15 but my download had also dropped to 20mbps, thats a decrease of around 6 Mbps, my upload stayed the same. My DSL up time had been reset on my modem also. Is this DLM or some other trickery at play?

I'm not unhappy with this though, because I am a online gamer so a lower ping is important to me, and this halved it.

since the vodafone modem missreads stats, cant really tell you.

it sounds like you moved down to about DLM-1 (cant tell where your pinging to...)

ild flick TimA a message, and just tell him, your line had a odd rsync after that message.. he can dig up your stats and see whats happened.

Can somebody please explain a little to me about what my stats say. Am I on DLM 1 because I have a 0ms delay? Also, are those high average or low error rates I am getting? I would love to know if some work needs to be done on my line. (Edit: It may be worth mentioning that my modem was restarted last night)
