I have a ticket open with Vodafone. This issue is only a small portion of issues we are facing with the HG659. The technician told us that they have made the supplier (Huawei) aware of the issue but they have no ETA on a resolution.

Ended up requesting (and getting) a credit for the value of the modem to purchase some better hardware. Frustrating, but happy we have control over the hardware choice now.

A lot of consumer modems nowadays (especially ISP issued) come with WAN down spoofing or equivalent feature (anything that redirects your web traffic to an error page saying the internet connection is not working usually by a combination of intercepting DNS and/or HTTP) that's the first thing I disable as sometimes it gets detected as a captive portal by client devices. Usually it's easily disabled (once you find the option) in the GUI otherwise you might have to issue some CLI commands to get rid of it all.

Obviously you can disable captive portal support on the client keeping in mind in the future you will need to open your browser and manually log in to networks that actually have a captive portal.

I had this happen with my router, I had to change the SSID and then change it back, that seemed to fix it and I haven't had the issue since.

It was a pain as I had to reset all the wi-fi connections in the house.

Wow, you were lucky, they outright refused to acknowledge there was a wider problem with the unit and it was just me even though there was a growing number of users posting int he same thread with same issues....

3rd party wifi unit and remembering to check DNS after a reboot has fixed the issue for me....

So all issues I have had around the HG659 are DNS related. There are two places to put DNS servers. One is in the DHCP server and the other is in "Internet" on the front page.  On a reboot the front page DNS entries are retained with no issues. The DHCP server drops the DNS entries in the Home network menu. Some network devices will retain their DNS lookups from the last connection (Android is OK) but others (iOS mainly) will lose DNS lookup and you end up with no internet on some devices.

These DNS server settings are retained:
DNS1
These are dropped:

Cheers, Matt.

joker97: anyone knows why sometimes all of a sudden out of the blue all my iOS devices (iOS 8) will connect to the router but have no internet access

(it connects to wifi, but uses 3G. router sees the device.)

nothing will fix it short of factory reset router

I had the same problem when I set a static route on the Huawei.  Happened for both iOS7 and iOS8.  As I couldn't get anything diagnostic out of iOS about the TCP/IP stack I abandoned trying to do anything complicated with the HG659 and bought myself a Asus.  That and the fact the HG659 kept losing its config.

For the DNS settings not to be lost when you make other config changes you have to log in as the admin and make them in the Internet section.  This wasn't what took my iOS devices offline tho'.

It was luck + three months of being passed around different support people. In the end I emailed the person I was dealing with directly and asked them to get the credit sorted. Two hours later everything was sorted.

Purchased new hardware - not looking back!

The underlying tone of your threads on your modem suggests you want someone to tell you the modem is a POS etc etc.
Nobody is sayng that, the major ISP's deem the equipment to be ok.
I believe Huawei equipment to be almost always good.

Its like comparing a mercedes to a mistubishi, just because one is 'affordable' doesnt mean its a POS.
I've got a nearly brand new modem that is doing similar things, from another brand. These things happen.

if it dies, then i will. but it hasn't, so i'll treat it like a 2015 Mitsi Lancer (man those things are cheap!)

All my configuration of the modem has been done with the admin login. It always drops manual DNS servers from the DHCP server on a reboot.
