TangoNZ: Hi DHC3. We've got the same problem. I'm on DSL with Telstra in North Canterbury, where we only get ADSL1 as we're in the wops wops. I'm fortunate enough to get about 6000kpbs constant connection (as seen in modem status), and during most of the day I can often get 600KB/s or higher download speeds from good servers.
But lately I noticed speeds were dramatically slowing down at night, to the point of feeling like its on dial up. Downloads can sit at about 15KB/s and just general browsing was slowing to the point where my wife was complaining. I contatced Telstra support and they got me to run speed tests off their server which basically confirmed this. From about 6pm til late evening our broadband is terrible.
Is there anything we can do about this? I'm assuming its a Telecom wholesale line and the slowdown is due to extra usage in the evenings on our local exchange, so it wouldn't make much difference which ISP we're on, or would it?
Time to find a new industry!
