Just port 25, no SSL/TLS, and just use outgoing authentication. Depends on the client, of course.
And please, for the love of god, don't get a virus like so many others .. or i'll be blocking pretty swiftly :P

Chris,

Now that I've looked at TestraClear's Mail+ pages, it does seem to offer (for a cost) Remote Access to mail regardless of what ISP network one is connected to.

However, I'm not clear if this is using a client like Outlook, or using their web-mail pages ... is anyone using Mail+ ??

Heh thanks, cg. I'll make sure she is protected.

Is the server the same? smtp.clear.net.nz? Also the format of the username is the same? hers is company/username.

I'm going to try and get this working through a gmail account by adding her work email address as a 2nd email address. You can then configure gmail to send via the correct SMTP server. See http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=22370&rd=3

Rickles: Remote mail is on the way out, so don't use that anymore. Just straight SMTP auth is fine.

westy_nz: Yeah just smtp.clear.net.nz, and the same username as POP including any prefixes e.g. something/username. But good luck with gmail, it may be better with multiple provider accounts.

cg,

Thanks for that. However, are you saying that I can use my TC email account, using an email client (not webmail) anywhere in the world, using any ISP I can connect to?

In my experience (Australia twice a year, USA every 18 - 24 months), even if TC accepts the incoming call, the ISP I'm using is unlikely to pass my request through its servers in the first place.

Cheers,

R.

We have started blocking large CIDR's (port 25 only) around the world notorious for spam via authentication.
Eventually most of international will be blocked, as there's no real reason to be using our SMTP from Nigeria etc. If you travel, then use webmail or the ISP you're on to send through.

But in essence yes, with mail+ for POP and SMTP auth, you can possibly travel anywhere and use Clear.net's MTA's.

cg,

Thanks again for reply .... back to relying on GMail for us wandering classless IDRs .

Like many others, I prefer to use a mail client that has all my contacts, mail caches, documentation, etc at hand rather than a cumbersome web-mail interface ... and also readily simple for when plugging into a work/sanctioned network ... all of which Chris's wife is trying to achieve without a full blown VPN.

P.S.

>If you travel, then use webmail or the ISP you're on to send through.<

I meant to add that a lot of ISPs do not have smtp/pop3 features, e.g. free wifi from, say McDonalds or a public library, or even Vodafone mobile broadband through one of their third-party suppliers like Crazy John in Australia. With those it's either web-mail or the GMail workaround.

Our library allows pop and smtp. Wifi that blocks this is pretty useless, as many people only use wifi hotspots for checking their email. If they have 5 email accounts they are hardly going to check eaich of those manually using webmail.

Are the original issues with email starting to go away?

I really used to care about 2mbit of email spam hitting something, but with 100mbit links I care less and less.

The cost of data is getting cheaper than the cost of management.

I run anti spam filters on in and out going, and we have grey lists as well.  Doesn't stop everything, but slows it down.

I saw someone mentioned SPF records.  I had checking in for that, but dropped it.  People don't update their SPF records when they move providers, so the whole thing just breaks.  Wasted my time that I didn't get paid for and cost me an upset customer.

Some customers do get hit with spam all the time.  We just push it off though gmail or yahoo who seem to clean most of it up for them.

I don't bother with spf records either. Too much fiddling around and potential for problems.

Unfortunately some big providers such as Hotmail/Live.com/Microsoft will only be more "easygoing" if you setup SPF. They have their place, if administrated correctly. They don't work for all situations though.

Chris,

Did you get anothet providers SMTP running within GMail at all?

I have a TelstraClear email account and I tried every variation of authentication (or not) and port numbers within GMail, but it will not 'take', viz. keep getting error message saying my "provider is taking too long".

Cheers,

R.

Why doesn't Telstraclear's smtp server support an authenticated connection over TLS/STARTTLS on port 587 or SSL on port 465 like practically any decent email provider does?
