I signed up to TelstraClear on the $75 HomePlan deal about a month ago. Most nights though, the speeds are unbelievably slow (I'm on the wireless). I used to be on Telecom and they were fine. I live in Rotorua. I did a couple of speed tests. TelstraClear has to be lying, because my speed is no where near what they claim it to be:

Adobe Flash Player update took about 10 minutes to update!

Anyone have any ideas on what i could do?

Firstly you need to do a test with a cabled connection to your router. Wireless speeds can vary a lot depending on your conditions.

Secondly you'll need to provide your router ADSL sync stats. Speedtest results show nothing - what is important is the speed your modem connects at. You'll also need to describe your home wiring setup, whether you have a master DSL ftiler or use plug in filters, whether you have a monitored alarm, and whether you've performed a basic isolation test removing all other devices from phones jacks. Looking at the Chorus SAT will also tell us whether you're in a 10Mbps zone or not. Around 80% of NZ homes should see sync speeds of 10Mbps or greater.

Statistically speaking internal home wiring is the single biggest factor causing poor DSL speeds. You need to eliminate your home before you start looking at your ISP.

Thanks for the reply. looks like ill have to go do some testing on my home PC.

According to Chorus, i'm
  • ADSL2+
  • VDSL2
  I use plug in filters, but dont have a monitored alarm.

I unplugged all the other devices from the phone jacks and here are my speeds from a computer connected directly to the router:

Your Downstream Sync Rate is 2.6 and throughput 2.5Mbps.
Can you repost the part between SNR and Attainable Rate?
Zooming in... I think it says Attenuation downstream in 0.1dBs so 9.5 & 5.9 dBs

But I can see that your top attachment shows a speedtest at 5.24Mbps. What were your line stats then?

You may wish to look at the GZ "Check your home wiring" thread. We were getting 2Mbps download then GZer Coffeebaron put in a master splitter and we went to 16Mbps.

Just a side note, i did a speed test on my phone this morning: here are the results.



I know you said speedtests dont really tell us much but surely there must be something behind it.

I'm just confused as to why it would change so much between morning and night. I will look at the wiring thread tonight and try further diagnose the problem.

Wireless is never a good indicator for speed tests, you should always used a wired connection.

Well going by the data from the Thompson and the G.992.5 it looks like you are connected to a ADSL2+ DSLAM.

I believe the plan that you are on only supports BUBA backhaul not the newer eUBA which is Ethernet based more so than ATM.
If that is the case you will likely be effected by time of day congestion depending how many people are in your area / how much people are using their connections.

You could try and ring Telstra and ask them if it is BUBA or eUBA.

That's just my 2c anyway.

Update - had coffeebaron in today to check my line and install a master filter. Straight away, line speed jumped 2.5 times the original. (7 to 19)

Knowing that my end is good, Now all i need is telstra clear to sort things out on their end.
