For the last few weeks I've had ongoing problems trying to operate wi-fi at home.

My details:

Computer Apple iMac running OS X (10.7.3)
paradise broadband with static IP address
motorola surfboard cable modem
I've tried D-link, Cisco and Belkin routers as well the iMac's internet sharing (internal router)

The trouble started when, after a broadband outage, I was given a new network settings by Telstraclear. They got the internet working again but I've had no wireless ever since.

I've tried the Telstra, Apple and router technical support lines. No-one has been able to get things working. I've tried setting up wireless on my old PC laptop but that won't work either (though it used to). 

Could there be some conflict between paradise broadband settings and wireless router settings. The Apple and router help lines have tried to set things up using DHCP but Telstra want me to manually assign a static IP address. Could this be the root of the problem?

I'm not super-technical but any help would be muich appreciated.

If you have working internet the issue won't be anything to do with TelstraClear, it will simply be incorrect configuration of the router's wireless settings.

It's going to be hard for anybody to really help you because if you've already tried multiple devices you're clearly making mistakes with the configuration. Your best bet is probably to find somebody who know's what they're doing and get them to help you. Configuring a router + wireless is literally a 5 minute job.

Static public IP address as supplied by Telstraclear is configured on the WAN interface of the router. Your computers connect to LAN interface of router and may use DHCP. Wireless would typically use DHCP. My guess is that you simply don't understand that you can't have the static public IP address on your computer and also communicate with your router.

You mean a new Static IP address?

Did you have a working wireless router and static IP address prior to your outage?
If telstraclear have assigned you a static IP, you need to place that IP, with the relevant DNS servers, into the router configuration.

Your PC's should be obtaining an IP from the router automatically and shouldn't be assigned the static IP address TC have given you.
